Policies, Danno...policies. When looked at on paper, Obama's policies such as his tax rebates for trading in old gas guzzlers for more fuel efficient cars was no different than Dubya's tax rebate for mammoth SUV's, except for the intended consequences. Someone needed to point out the hypocrisy from the RWNutters who regurgitate RWNut media talking points like, "Cash-for-clunkers" as if they've actually got something intelligent to say. You happened to harp in on the Chevy Volt. You nutters don't do this because of any perceived failure of policy, but because you've got it in your infantile minds that libruls make preposterous policies of investment while being deaf, dumb and blind to all the policy disasters that have cost our country enormous amounts of money and still do at the hands of so-called 'conservatives'.

I object to the constant name calling of 'nutters' for anyone who disagrees with your messiah.

Cash for clunkers took perfectly good cars and turned them into garbage. Imagine what giving those cars to the poor would have also done for the economy? Sure, they'd need insurance and the like...but imagine the single mom who has no transport. If she would have been given an old car, she probably could have gotten a job. Gotten off welfare. Become a productive member of society. I'm not saying in these hard economic times that that would have been an instantaneous effect....but wow, those discarded cars that were being destroyed could have changed the lives for many, many people.

And it was a fake stimulus as well, because as previously said, people rushed out and bought cars they couldn't afford in the long run. Much like the housing boom in 04-05. A repo'd car does nothing to stimulate the economy.

Almost $4200 per car...

I'm not sure what the argument you are trying to make is but that's a damn good deal for the sellers of junk and that the cars were scrapped. Considering every "we buy junk cars" ad you see is for $250 to $350, rofl.gif

Let me try to make my point again, calling the program "clunkers" is misleading, many many of those trade ins were not clunkers at all yet were scrapped as if they were despite the good use they could have been put to by so many in need.

The creators of this program knew many cars would be very much in working order thats why they required dealers to ruin the engines by draining the oil and then " and replaced with a sodium silicate solution, then the engine is started and run until the solution, becoming glass-like when heated, causes engine internals to abrade and ultimately seize.[37] In addition, the salvage or scrap facility which acquires the vehicle cannot sell any powertrain components from the scrap vehicle.

All this waste was prompted to remove less fuel efficient cars off the road.

The program its self was wasteful as one would expect from any program but it is the destroying of perfectly good cars which I have the real problem with.

Here was the top trade in.

Those who think Obama is a Socialist, a Muslim, a non-citizen, the antichrist, Hitler, are loony. The fact that such labels constantly are used at Obama without your objection and that you yourself refer to Obama as being a messiah to me is ironic.

My father told me, and he was right..."If you cannnot afford a good car, you cannot afford a bad car" Giving an old clunker to a welfare mom is just handing her a pile of trouble she doesn't need and cannot pay for, which means WE will pay for it. No thanks. Use the money to educate her so she can get a good job, get off welfare and buy a good car.

However, the program showed that tax incentives can get people to do things. So why not a tax incentinve for employers to hire only legal workers?

Why would he want to hang out with a bunch of RWNutters who think he's a Kenyan-Muslim Socialist, Hitler-wannabe?

Best to remain blissfully ignorant. He will find out what people think of him next year

For the trillionth time. It takes $100 to get a green card and a social security number.

Besides your white/black people that work for themselves doing odd jobs, handy man services, auto related work (engine swaps, trans swaps, brakes, paint, etc.)....which DO NOT pay taxes.

All the Mexicans I have met that were illegal had 'valid to the naked eye' documentation.

Unless the company is audited then nobody knows. So again, the "illegals" are technically working legally. The taxes come out and go to the government.

Not sure why you cannot comprehend this. It's really not that hard.

India, gun buyback and steamroll.

Every single car that was turned in wasn't some steaming pile of rubbish. A lot of working, reliable, good cars were destroyed, simply because the gov't wanted to stimulate the auto industry, and make it a better situation to get into a NEW car many didn't need, nor couldn't afford,

A number of exotic cars were scrapped too.

Exotic Cars crushed under the program

Jalopnik reviewed the lists published by the NHTSA and found numerous cars crushed under the program that had book values far exceeding the rebates offered by the government. Among some of the cars whose book value was worth more than government rebates included models ranging from the Buick GNX to the Bentley Continental R.[82] However, a further review noted that some cars that were thought of as being crushed under the program were improperly recorded a/or swapped for other car models or trims.[83] Some exotic/collectible vehicles were scrapped under the program, including a Maserati Biturbo,[84] a GMC Syclone,[85] a La Forza SUV,[83] a TVR 280i,[83] and Chevrolet Corvettes.[86]

Something doesn't add up. Maserati, Corvette, Bentley....Those aren't clunkers. Why would the owner sell them for a few grand?

Then why not offer the tax incentive? It's not that hard...oh and back it up with having to document the workers are legal by giving the E-verify code.

Why would you be against that?

who determines which is which and who gets them?

But if you object to the program in general, I agree. The government first buys an interest in an industry and THEN the government offers tax incentives (your money) to buy cars the government has an interest in.

This is why the government CANNOT be involved in manufacturing and other business. It is simply impossible to do so without a major conflict of interest.
