My wife's brother is in the U.S. on a work visa and has filed for becoming a U.S. citizen. He has been asking me questions about the process about becoming a citizen since some years ago, after marrying his sister, I got her a visa and helped her become a citizen. But I don't feel qualified to help him and I wonder if there is a good book I can give him with directions about the process of becoming a citizen. (Actually, I had found a very good book myself that had helped me very much when it came to getting my wife a visa and helping her become a citizen, so I expect such books should exist with current laws in mind. )

I don't know if this is exactly what you are looking for, but sometime ago I found this online and thought it would be helpful to us in the future. http://www.uscis.gov/files/article/M-476.pdf

Hope it helps. Also USCIS has all the information needed, it is just a matter of sorting through it. You can also tell your brother in law to start a profile here and most every question he has I am sure someone here will have the answer for him.

Best of luck!

My wife's brother is in the U.S. on a work visa and has filed for becoming a U.S. citizen.

If that's true, he has flushed $680.00 down the toilet, as nobody who's in the U.S. with a visa is eligible for naturalization.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

He is eligible for naturalization only if he has been a greencard (permanent resident) holder. You cannot apply for citizenship while you are on a non-immigrant visa like the H1B "work" visa or F1 student visa.
