Advice on Green Card Travel Document

Hi -

My wife is GC holder and I am US citizen. We moved abroad for my job w/ US company and previously had a travel document which is now expired. We were looking to reapply for another one but says if you apply and leave before biometrics you may invalidate the application. We will only be in US for a couple weeks as our kids need to get back to school so don't think it is enough time to complete everything.

Any advice what is best option? I feel like we are in a catch-22 at the moment. we want to do the right thing, but confused if travel document will work out. As we plan on being back in the states at some point, I'd prefer that she not have to give up her card. Anyone in a similar situation?

What do you mean by "travel document"? Re-entry permit? How long have you lived abroad?

06/14/2011 - Day 103 - E-mail notice: Interview letter mailed, interview scheduled for July 20th

07/20/2011 - Day 139 - Interview at Federal Plaza USCIS location

07/22/2011 - Day 141 - E-mail approval notice received (Card production)

07/27/2011 - Day 146 - 2nd Card Production Email received

07/28/2011 - Day 147 - Post-Decision Activity Email from USCIS

08/04/2011 - Day 154 - Husband returns home from abroad; Welcome Letter and GC have arrived in the mail

("Resident since" date on the GC is 07/20/2011

You say you plan on being back in the States at "some point". When will this some point be? If you are currently living abroad and plan to continue living abroad, she might just have to give up her GC now and then re-apply through IR-1 or DFC once the time comes for you to return to the US.

If her re-entry permit has expired, she is going to have tough time returning to the US. With the amount of time you've spend abroad, it's possible she has already abandoned her permanent residence in the US (it's actually pretty likely, I think). Unfortunately I'm not sure if there is any way for you besides her losing her GC, and eventually reapplying for it once you are planning to move back to the US.. More experienced members will probably chime in, but that's my take on the situation.
