Letter from US District Court sent, but hasn't arrived

Hello there

My wife was granted two year green card resident status last year. We are planning on traveling to Philippines later in October.

Last week my former landlord emailed me about a letter that came for her from a US District Court. I gave him the new address and he forwarded it. As it hasn't arrived yet and it's been a week, we are getting a little nervous about it, worrying it is something that had a deadline attached to it. (We are also worried that they did not use our new address which we updated USCIS with.)

So, since we don't have the letter, or know what it is about, or specifically which court to contact (other than a "US District Court"), if the letter doesn't arrive, who might my wife contact to find out what this is about in the event that the landlord forwarded to an incorrect address, or was lost somehow?

thanks for any advice

District Courts don't deal with immigration.

Could it be an outstanding parking fine or summon as a witness? I'd call the court closest to your old residence and ask. The local police station could also do a search for you in case it's an outstanding warrant.

thanks- she doesn't drive, and has not been in any legal trouble, but yeah, I guess we'll just call the nearest court down there directly. Weird.

thank you

You can also usually do searches online too. Depends on your state.

Federal district courts don't handle parking citations. Those are handled by municipal courts. Anything in a US district court will have to do with federal law. Local courts and police stations won't likely know anything about it.

It may be a summons. If it is, and it wasn't delivered by a process server, then I doubt she's in any serious legal trouble. It might be a jury summons. Both of my step-kids got them shortly after they got their drivers licenses. We had to fill out the waiver section on the summons and mail them back because neither of them are US citizens, and can't serve on a jury.

Thanks all, yes it was a jury summons, which was strange as she had no driver license. Sort of a shock before we knew what it was. Thanks again!

She's gotten herself on the jury list somehow. Different states pull names from different sources. In California, they often pull names from the DMV records, which also includes anyone who got a state ID card.
