i like the idea of free! haha.. i got an australian paypal... i guess ill try and open a US one with my wifes email then link up our bank account... good idea :)

Let me know how you go and feel free to ask me questions :) It's been really good for me :) I was sending money back and forth for quite some time. I did it ONCE using ANZ to transfer to my US bank account (without Paypal) and it cost me around $100 ($50 charged by ANZ, $50 charged by Wells Fargo). Since that time i've sent money at least 20 times and I only had fees at the start (before I found and understood the "free" way).

Yeah when I was with nab back home they charged $50 to send them chase here in the us charged $35 to receive. I switched banks to St. George and got one normal account and one that had just a visa debit and nothing else.

I then sent the spare visa card to Rachel and when I wanted to send her money I just transferred the funds into that second account. So long as I kept the balance in my main account over $500 both accounts were fee free and any month she used the card it cost a once only fee of $10 for as many times as she could use the card. Not free, but damn cheap for a instant international money transfer :) since both cards were same bank, there wasn't the week wait that the $50+ international transfers have :)

Paypal because its FREE :) I have one Paypal linked to my Aussie account. Another for my US account. I transfer from my Aussie bank account to Aussie paypal. Then I send the money to my US paypal. Then I send to my US bank account. Might take a few more steps. And takes a few days but due to it being free, makes total sense to me :P

Here are the rules for the fees: https://www.paypal.c...d=_display-fees You have to "add money" to your Aussie paypal first (using the add money function) in order to avoid paying the fees. If you don't have a paypal balance it draws from your account and that's when it charges you a fee.

I like that method V&T. I'll be trying it myself soon

I've been using a travel card that I got from the Commonwealth Bank which I preloaded with USD before coming over. They don't give a very good rate and take their cut that way and the ATM withdrawal fees are high. I have been going to the local TD Bank and doing a cash advance on the travel card which a MasterCard. Normally, you get charged interest on the advance but because the funds are already prepaid it's a free withdrawal . Still doesn't beat the paypal method

Does Paypal convert the currency at the actual exchange rate or do they take a few points as commission?

My card is a Commonwealth Bank Travel Money Card. My fiancee used a travelex card when we went travelling and I think it was better than the CBA bank card because it had a chip, PIN and gave better rates.

At the actual exchange rate. You can preview the amount (converted) before you send it.

Usually around a month. They've been a bit slow lately so 2 months at most.
