Tonight at work i helped a retired quarter back choose sunglasses and then met a New Zealander who just recently arrived on a K-1 and his daughter on a K-2. I seriously love my job

I just wanted to know, If I have my EAD card am I authorised to work? or do I have to wait for my Green Card? I haven't got my Social yet... I can't get it till i get my gc

Well, the EAD gives you authorisation to work..but you also need the SSN to work. You're not able to get one with your EAD card?

I left it to late to get my Social # before my I-94 expired, so the gentleman said i had to come back once i got my gc. I don't think I can get my social with out my gc.

Also my EAD has an expiry of 1 year. What happens after that?

hmmm, you might have to wait for the greencard to work then. When i was filling out job apps alllll of them were asking for SSN. Mine has a one year expiry too, it doesn't matter though, your green card will replace the EAD when you get it

yes, almost every job I have applied for (only 2 lol) has asked for my social# or it says if I don't have one to tick that box, so I have. Oh thats good to know that my GC will replace the EAD! thank god, was a little clueless to that.

I just hope my GC arrives this week. Its been 18 days since i got my EAD/AP and usually the GC arrives after, but since i had a RFE it might take a little longer... It says I will hear something by march the 26th.

lol, applying for jobs here sucks! Have you had any with the long #### questionnaire's yet? Or one's where it doesn't let you enter in certain information because it's foreign? lol

Generally the questions they ask in the application are so full on, like race and gender and also criminal. I don't recall them asking this in Australia. oh well.

Yeah mine is at CSC now. I haven't got an interview or been asked to attend one. I just check my online status and it says: Its been transferred and is now being processed at a USCIS office. You will be notified by mail when a decision is made, or if the office needs something from you....blah blah blah

Let us know how the interview goes and fingers crossed to both of us to getting our GC soon.

You can definitely get a social security number with your EAD. You do not have to wait for your GC.

You will need the SS number to work. However nobody should be asking for the number on job applications. They only need it when you actually get the job. Be very careful with who you give your number to. Your number is sacred and supposed to be secret - like your tax file number in Australia (lots of places will ask for your SSN but they have no right to it).

If asked if you have a SSN on applications and you don't have it yet, just say you don't have it yet but it is pending.

The gentleman was wrong - you can use your EAD to get your SSN

You should have your green card within a year, which replaces your EAD. If you don't get your GS within a year (very rare) you can apply for a replacement EAD.

So if i go back into the social security office just with my EAD card or paper work, they can issue me a social number?

Yep they can!

Bring the application form SS-5 from the website

http://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/

and make sure you have whatever paperwork you will need (listed on website).

If you have only recently received your EAD you may not be in the SSA system yet, but don't worry, they will take copies of your documents (bring your originals with you) and do a manual check.

Oh I got my EAD on the 15th of feb. So I should be in the System, cause the guy said come 10 days after getting any documents so they can be added to the system. Sweeeeet. Im excited now.
