NP! :star: My husband just included my name in his last week and was asked for it. You need your SSN for almost everything here in the US. If you've already applied for one, then it should come in the mail soon.

You really need to call the insurance company and ask them what to do in your case.

Why is this in the european section? :x

My husband was able to put me on his insurance without my SSN. He just had to call them and explain. For the record, it was Blue Cross Blue Shield.

I was covered by my husband's health insurance in the US for at least 2 years before I was even allowed to enter the country, and definitely without an SSN.

Check with the specific health insurance provider you have.

It will vary from insurance provider to insurance provider. Your husband needs to check with the company that provides his health insurance. If they do require a SSN, he may be able to get them to cover you all the same until the time you do get your SSN.

The other concern though, is that US insurance companies often only allow changes to the insurance policies to be made at two specific times - an annual enrollment date anniversary or for a short time period following a life-changing event, such as marriage or the birth of a child. He should make sure that he can add you now or if he has to wait until his health insurance anniversary date. It will depend on how long ago you got married.

You definitely do want to be covered by his health insurance though. Medical care without insurance is very very expensive in the US.

We also have Blue Cross through my husband's employer. He was able to add me during open enrollment without SSN but we had to show our marriage certificate. The best way to go about it is by calling the insurance company or the Benefits Department of your husband's company in case he has medical care through his job.

Like the above comment, I only needed to show marriage certificate to enroll my wife in my work's health insurance. After she had the SSN, we added that info to her record, but definitely wasn't a requirement for enrollment with my provider.
