There are a variety of reasons they might want to see your marriage certificate. Did you immigrate through marriage to a US citizen or LPR? Or, did you ever petition for a foreign spouse?

Make copies of every original document you send. Include the copies AND the originals. Include a letter requesting that they keep the copies and return the originals when they're done inspecting them. Include a self-addressed (meaning addressed to you) and stamped (with the appropriate postage) envelope that NVC can use to return your documents. I've helped a couple of people do this with RFE responses to NVC and they got their documents back within a month or two.
