We joined a great little gun club here, Sportsman Club of Franklin County which charges only $50 per year and gives you a key to the place so you can shoot anytime you want. They have indoor, outdoor, trap and skeet ranges and archery ranges. They get a pretty good crowd on weekends and have leagues and competitions, but during the week, you are mostly on your own, or they may be a few others there. Plus it is FREE except for targets ($3 per round for skeet, honor system, bring your own for the others)

We often go shooting on Wednesdays but the summer skeet leagues are over. I had to go to work today for a few hours and when I got home, Alla was not home. "Hmmm, probably shopping"

A little while later she comes in the door taking off her shoes and cradling her favorite rifle, the Winchester M52b with Burris 2.5x scope in the crook of her arm :o

"Where were you?"

I went shooting

"By yourself"

Da, I have a key too you know, it is a family membership. I KNOW how to shoot.

"Uh, yeah, was anyone else there?"

No just me, I shot at 50 meters. Will you clean my rifle?

"uh, yeah sure"

I want to put it in my office, can I keep it in my office? It is really a good looking rifle.

"uh, yeah sure"

I love shooting, I wanted to go shooting today, so what?

"Nothing, Cool. You know now you are driving around in your own car with a rifle on the backseat, so you are kind of Americanized"

Not really, look at my shoes.

Yep...high heels.

Incidentally she brought home her targets and you do not want her shooting at you! Good rifle.

You know the last few months in Kiev the advertisement for guns and sporting activities features predominately women. It appears that women make up a significant portion (market)of gun ownership and they definitely like to go shooting. Probably thinking about some cheating RUB husband or boyfriend? I got to say after watching all the beautiful Ukrainian women in these advertisement, it made me want to go shooting also.

Well...most products feature attractive women. Been going on for centuries. Are you really surprised?

The number of women shooters is definitely up all over (Except where it's illegal. Can we all say "The UK!"). I've never been clear on the legality of buying and carrying guns in the FSU. Seems they do hunt and my wife's father had a rifle to kill livestock. I know Russia imports some nice AK-style rifles and some nice shotguns that use box magazines rather than feed tubes.

Before we get too excited about women overtaking men in the shooting arts...let's keep in mind it's a natural fact that many women can't handle the recoil from many larger caliber guns, and some women find it difficult or impossible to rack certain auto pistols. Some pistols grips are too big for a woman also. Then there's the 12 Gauge shotgun....not a favorite with the ladies.

So, enjoy your dreams about Ukrainian female sharpshooters in miniskirts, but let's keep our eye on reality.

Alla doesn't wear mini skirts but her twice weekly trips to go shooting are not fantasy, and she DOES wear heels. She switches to a pair of "athletic shoes" for position shooting but then changes back and puts the ugly shoes in the trunk.

she does not like hard kicking guns, it is true. She shooets a .22 rilfe, a 28 guage semi auto shotgun and has intents on a .22 pistol and an AR match rifle, .223 None of them are kickers. But her intent os to make a hole in paper of break a clay target and any of those do the job just as well. They ONLY reason she is intersted in the AR is she really wants to shoot in CMP Service Rifle and she needs a qualified rifle for that. The AR is her choice because it is lghter and does not kick.

As far as ownership of firearms in Russia or Ukraine...bolt action, break action rifles and shotguns can be owned relatively easily. You do need a permit but if you are not a criminal you will get it. Moisin Nagants are popular rifles with farmers, particularly in rual areas for defending livestock. The grocery stores and nesstands have just as many gun magaizines and catalogs as we have here. Trap shooting is far more popular than skeet shooting and biathalon is wildly popular in European countries and FSU countries as a spectator sport. Many shooting clubs have rental guns available. We shoot at an indoor range in Donetsk which is a combination indoor shooting range, go-go club, dance club, bar. It is an old time shooting gallery with moving metallic targets, all of which resemble some sort of German soldier or Politician. In case anyone thought they forgot.

RUB countries tend to use very provacative photos of women for advertising just about anything, guns are no exception.

VERMONT! I Reject Your Reality...and Substitute My Own!
