I am trying to send my fiancee an iphone 3g, but of course it would be unlocked. What is a good plan where we can get data enough to skype on a regular? Also we don't want a contract. Of course we're hoping she won't be in VN much longer. :-)

she's also paranoid of getting a router in the house b/c she thinks other will log on. I finally convinced her am about to send it and voila, her company randomly charged her for usage when she wasn't even home. So, now she's like cancel the router, and I'm like, I don't want to! Does anyone know of any like unlimited high speed internet over there that we can put a router on?

I'm really tired of her having to go turn on a computer every time we want to talk. At best, I'd like her to be able to use her phone over 3G and at least be able to call directly from wifi router whenever she's home.

All routers can be set up with security and make it where anyone else will need a password. I have set up several.

ip3g is nearing 3 generations old now and slow. are they still selling it on contract? last i checked, they were only selling the 3gs on contract. if you want to use it in Vietnam, your best bet would be to buy one on ebay or cl used, they do sell unlocked ones, or you can jailbreak and unlock it, i did it with a ip3g for my wife last year. Unless you have someone bring it back, you will have to pay a tarriff on the ip. my wife's internet at home is unlimited and she pays around 150.000vnd a month, her s-i-l is a teacher though, and they get a discount.

as for the router, set it to wpa2/aes with a solid password, and you should be good to go. you can also log onto the router to see who is using it, in case someone hacked it, but i doubt that someone would do so with wpa2/aes.

also, ip3g doesn't support skype video. an option that may work for wifi is to get an android, i've seen the optimus t refurb go for under $100, then get grooveip and in conjunction with google chat, you can make calls to any US numbers for free, though sound quality isn't great. you can load skype on the optimus t for skype audio only, no video. optimus t can be easily unlocked for just a few bux so she can use it as a phone in Vietnam.

OP - I use Pingo which is a virtual calling card in the US. It's .02 a minute. What fiancee and I use to to was she would call then I would decline call. Then I would call her back using Pingo. It's very cheap.

I hope this helps!

I just checked out Pingo and it seemed like it's 4 cents per minute. Am I missing something?

$10 for 250 minutes. 1 cent cheaper than rebtel.

Oh, I didn't know about the skype video thing. That's a bummer. Um, I will work around this though. I do have an ipod touch 4th gen for her as well for on wifi i guess.

I know about the router security. she's just parnoid.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Oh 150.000 unlimited... what company is that?
