What is the point of this poll? I am an American Muslim and find it and some of the comments very offensive. I asked that this topic gets closed!

Before making assumptions about the religion or the people that follow it, go brush up on some facts. I don't mind people not liking it, but don't go out if your way to defame it.

This pole is about Attitudes towards Muslims in America.....

here is one of the wonderful ways that one elderly Muslim American was treated two day before Christmas (my mom)

her health was not so good that day we went shopping so she opted to sit in the van reading her kindle ...normal habit for her when she is too sick to walk around a lot in the store

i got a call on my cell phone to come right away plz

when i got out to the car i saw a group of people around the van and a lot of yelling and swearing at first i thought what happened has 911 been called for help

what i found was one man yelling obscenities at my mom claiming she was a terrorist and did not deserve to live in the USA

there were also a group of men trying to talk the man into returning to his car and to leave her alone finally one said what did she do to you? he said 9-11 the man responded she did not personally do that and what was done to every american not just you.......the man yelling said we dont need her kind here.......the man trying to talk reason to the angry man said we are all american here even her and it is her right to set in her car with out someone trying to verbally or physically attack her

before it was over the police did have to intervene

I give thanks to the men that came to her aide as she has a bad heart .....but it made me stop and think what would have happened if someone had not came to help her?

How does someone claiming to be American have the right to say who is American and who is not?

We live in a place that is not very diverse.....so there have been a few times we have been treated to the extreme

Should we as American Muslims blame all of the non American Muslims for the actions of a few? No we should not

Just as we American Muslims do not deserve to carry the burden of the bad Muslims in the world...

no one should should ever be judged by who their parents are what part of the world they came from what their religion is but

should judged by their own actions......

just my opinion

Move.

I read your story and my first thought was, bullcrap. Why did I think that? Because it would never happen here.

we live in a small town of about 600 people you would think that in a small town it would be more problematic but this happened at wal-mart parking lot in salem

you have a right to your opinion but it did happen and its sad when things like that happen ...it was not our first experience with this kind of treatment and it wont be the last but thanks God there are only some people that act like that most are very kind..... as far as moving.... no not even an option

I'm a 6'4" male. It has happened in the past that I am out walking late at night and a women becomes frightened of me and crosses the road or even runs to get away from me. I am no threat, but I know that, she does not. She runs because of stories she has heard or read in the newspapers and fear generated from her helplessness should I turn out to be a bad guy. I pay this price of being judged for the very small fraction of those who cause trouble and harm others. Unlike you, I am not about to yell that I am judged unfairly (which I am) or demand to be treated like the nice guy that I am. You have to get to know me to know I am not a bad guy. You cannot demand to be treated nicely either, because of that small minority who got you stereotyped.

So what do you do? Be the best person you can be and show others through your actions that their assumptions are wrong about you.

It seems that you have a rebuttal for everything, and not a very good one in this case. I'm just saying.

Going across the street to avoid you is quite different than accosting an elderly woman reading in her car.

Not to excuse the behavior, but what made the locals think she might be a terrorist? I thought the dress of someone from India is much different than say, Saudi Arabia, or Afghanistan. I guess ignorance knows no bounds.

Accosting a person in their car is indeed something you do not hear about that much. You have to LOOK into a car. Most folks never notice who is in a parked vehicle. It almost sounds like the guy had a chip on his shoulder to begin with. If she was indeed a threat I am sure someone would have broken a window.

And yes I have rebuttals for things like this. we are ALL victims of stereotype at one time or another. I am sure that you have stories about assumptions made about you because of one of your traits. And I'm sure much of it goes unnoticed.

In a town of 600 people, everyone knows everyone. Heck, in a town of 10,000 people, everyone knows everyone. I find it odd that these two people didn't know eachother. Makes me think drugs were involved.

I had an Asian friend move from California to Kentucky. She was back a few months later. She said it was impossible to get work where she was, that racism is alive and well in some parts. I have no idea who would hate Asians!

It's bad in Alabama. My BIL works at a VA Hospital as a PT, and he gets it all the time from the patients. Most of the time, they can't even get the country right.
