Sounds like a VJ hog hunt in the making. We can take the RUB women but they can only use knives. We need to let the men have a shot at the hogs too.

RUB women would break their necks with their bare hands...when the hogs are sleeping

This is great, enlightening, and very educational, si man.

Instead of simply getting VJ members together in a local restaurant, how about a hog-hunt, huh man?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I'm posting this on behalf of a VJ buddy who lives in rural Texas. His property is being encroached upon by wild pigs. These pigs are a nuisance (at minimum) and a menace in many parts of Texas. In fact, it's now legal to hunt them from airplanes.

My pal wants to know which rifle or gun might be best for shooting these pigs. Please make specific suggestions in this regard. He plans to harvest the meat from pigs that he kills. Thanks, si man.

Here is what your buddy should get to hunt those pesky pigs.

I am not a fan of the Savage 110. That aside as it is a personal preference thing really...

Unless someone is hunting hogs from a tree stand, ths is an exceedingly poor choice of rifle, though the cartridge it shoots may be adequate. In heavy brush the field of view of any scope, even the low powered ones I prefer, is too small to be shooting hogs mixed with dogs. Open iron sights or a red dot sight or an apeture sight would be better. One hog guide I know out of Bandera forbids his clients from using scopes. He says scopes are more dangerous to his dogs than the hogs are.

Overall length of a bolt rifle would be cumbersome in heavy brush

The bolt action itself is not what I would recommend. A slide action, lever action or reliable semi-auto is the way to go. For a while I used a Davis double barreled, side x side 16 guage shotgun with rifle type iron sights and sling added by my gunsmith. Barrels were shortened to a pleasant looking and still short-enough-to-handle 24". Because of the almost non existant receiver length of the double gun, a 24" barrel actually ended up with a shorter overall length than a 20" barreled pump gun. The 16 guage has plenty of power to kill hogs and the more slender barrels in the 24" length gave a very pleasing appearance. Short barreled 12 ga. double guns always look to me like someone cut their legs off. I would even do it with a 20 guage given some of the slugs we have now. I thought of it as my "express rifle for hogs". It provide two very fast shots at close range. I did not use the sling while actively hunting, for what? A sling snags brush like nothing else you can imagine so when running after the dogs I took off the sling and pocketed it. The sling was a carrying strap for when we walked back to the trucks.

As Tbone or anyone else can tell you, the brush in Texas is full of stuff that will bite you, sting you, or stab you.

If we go for a VJ hog hunt, I am there!

I suggest the fiberglass stock for that.

Speaking of that, a buddy rigged up his hog gun with a Remington M870, 20" rifles barrel with iron sights, 8 shot extension, a ventlated handguard  and one of those fiberglass "speed load" stocks that stores shells in the butt and they just pop out in your hand when you want to reload.

The gun was good (how to fault an 870?) but the handguard was cosmetic bullsh*t I never had any need for, the barrel does not get THAT hot while hog hunting. I admire a fine looking firearm and figure the critter would rather get killed with a good looking gun (wouldn't you?)but it isn't a Christmas tree! Dangling all sorts of unnecessary stuff on it doesn't help. The stock was good and durable and a good place to store extra ammo, better than pockets. But there is no need to "speed load" per se. You have 8 shots crammed in there already and that is enough for the wildest and wooliest hog meelee you will ever come across.

I do not suggest using "gun cabinet jewelry" for hog hunting. Especially not in thick Texas brush, it will be all scratched and gouged in no time. This is for the working gun. The Remington 870 express is a good choice.
