Hi,

I don't quite understand a thing about the "poverty guideline" and how to calculate it. I'd really appreciate your advice.

Thank You :)

Go here. Determine the size of your family which is all dependants, yourself, and your intended beneficiary(ies). Find the dollor amount associated with that family size, multiply by 1.25. If your income is above that amount you do not need a co-sponsor. Below that amount and you do.

Let's assume there is you, your fiancee or wife, a son from a previous marriage, and a daughter with your fiancee or wife. Total family size is 4. Income is $22,350. 125% is 22350*1.25=$27,937.50. Now you ask, "Do I make more than $27,937.50?" Yes, no co-sponsor. No, a co-sponsor is needed.

Hope this helps.

My husband and I don't have any kids. however, he lives with his parents, one brother and two sisters. Do you have to include them? Thanks for the explanation. It was very useful to me.
