hello everyone!!

i just found out today that my son's sputum smear last september are all positive. :crying: they can't tell yet though if its TB or not. but the nurses at the D.O.T room said that it's a RARE case because he had clear chest x ray but have 3 smears positive. plus she said that its the first time they encountered this kind of case on a kid. now im not sure if i should go to my interview tomorrow since my son might be undergoing 6-months treatment.

can somebody please enlighten me what these 3 positive smear means? i am still in denial that my son is sick since he doesn't have cough nor losing weight. he also eats alot and never loses appetite :(

thank you!

I've looked at this post several times and honestly don't know what to tell you except do as much searching on google and talking to the Dr. at St. Lukes if possible. My prayers are with you and your son from the start and I haven't been ignoring you or your pain.......just don't know what to say as I'm not an expert on TB or the testing. TB info here's a link that is general in nature. Bless you both.

what i know if the test is for the specific virus mycobacterium tuberculosis then yes your child has contracted the virus, maybe the reason for having a clear x ray is because the virus has not cause that much damage to show on the xray. It's best to protect yourself also if he is indeed positive until treatment for tb has started.

My wife just had to get tested here yesterday for her new Job. Our doctor said that if someone has ever had the TB test where they poke your arm with a needle and look for a reaction, then all tests from that point on will be positive for TB. He said the chest X-Ray is the only reliable way to check for TB after that test has been done. Perhaps your son had this test in the past and that is why the tests are showing positive? Good luck with everything and we wish you the best of luck.

I've never heard that before and have in fact had several of those TB Tests in my life all of which were negative.

I do understand that someone who received the BCG Vaccine (which is common in the Philippines) will always test positive on the Skin Reaction TB Test. In fact our little guy who received the BCG did react positive to the Skin Reaction TB Test and was required to undergo a chest X-Ray (which they try to avoid for children) to confirm negative results.

Hmmm. Maybe I had better look for a new family doctor? biggrin.gif
