I suspect if Mass were next to the Mexican border with the same demographics, the differences would not be so stark.

THose coming from South of the Border, typically have minimal education and even after a generation or so lag behind the average American and even some others immigrants which come here.

SOmeone posted a piece here not long about the trouble TX will be in as the better educated (higher earning ) folks die off and those that replace them will be able to contribute to the tax base, the numbers were pretty sobering.
