How long it takes to change passport to married name

Does anyone have any idea how long it takes to change your passport to your married name (Phil. Consulate in NY)? I will have to immediately change my passport name because the greencard will be under my married name and I might have a problem reentering the U.S. even if I bring my marriage certificate right? Is there any form of rush service? I plan to travel on January.

Thanks for any advice!

I changed my last name on my US passport and I did it through surface mail. It only took 2 weeks to get it back along with the rest of the original documentation I had to send to support the name change. You can expedite your passport, you just have to pay an additional fee. I didn't expedite mine and it was still pretty quick.

you don't have to change your name on the philippine passport, if has many years left on it expires maybe 6 or 10 years keep it until you are a united states citizen in three years then apply fo us passport, if you need to traval international, buy the air line tickets in your maiden name so that it matches the philippine passport, when return to the united states use your permanent resident card, your marriage certificate, and passport.

Hi,

U have to contact philippine embassy. La office from what I've made quiry u have to regestired your marriage first,at nso.then get marriage cert.from nso thru phils embassy in la.give them a ring and u can get it done by mail..

If u r planning to travel by jan,I doubt that u can get it done by then, don't worry cozive heard about pple travelling with green card maiden nameon passport, they are fine, when re entry to us u can use ur gc.u can use ur maiden name to purchase ticket, just bring ur marriage cert with u just in case.

Then when u get back u can work on getting ur passport on married name if u have too or if its about to expire.no trouble at all.goodluck

I did both the report of marriage and passport amendment through the ny consulate, everything took about 3 weeks. The forms are all on the website. :)

Just remember that changing your passport and having it amended is not the same. I did not ask for a renewal because its still valid until 2015. I just had it amended

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

Im just got married last 2011 August and our MC is till in NSO im waiting for the release and im working outside country for about 5 years now and my Passport will be expired on Aug.2012 im still under the Green passport and now that i got marroed my husband will file i-130 and in filing of that they need my copy of Birth certificate , passport and Marriage contarct to submit to USCIS .

My question is this , It is fine to give to my husband my passport copy under still my name because i didnt yet changed it or renew it. and to renew my passport they need my Marriage contract for change also of my name and status .

In order to file a UScis I-130 it is fine to give my passport copy as under still my name (single)?i hope that there will be no problem on it.

Thank you and need your help VJ members

Thanks so much everyone!! I'm glad I joined VJ .. before this I was in the dark about a lot of things!

Oh, and I used my old passport (with my Maiden Name) when submitting my documents to the USCIS. I applied for a CR1 visa. However, once you submit your passport with your Maiden Name, don't change your passport until you get your visa and enter the U.S. The visa will be issued in whatever name you use in your passport.

The forms necessary to report the marriage are on the NY Consulate website. I felt like that packet was more of a hassle to put together than any NVC documents. The NY consulate only sends the information to the DFA about once per month and their Customer Service Representatives couldn't even tell us when the batches go out. They were not that helpful. That being said, I'm certain that you can at least change the passport and send a copy of it to the NVC to ensure your greencard matches. If NVC is complete, you should also be able to change it at the US Embassy prior to the interview. They have a form for that as well.
