But how do they know it is a personal item ? I can write that down on a paper, customs form and attach that to the bike or the box but will they believe that, are they keeping track of what comes in the country ?

I think the bike is worth around 4500-5000$

If your bike is 4-5k worth it is not going to pass as an item less then 1k.... com on.

If customs officer goes thru your stuff he is def going to know you have under valued this thing to avoid duty.

They are trained to look for these things. To mu understanding if you are moving it as part of your personal things then there would not be any duty, personally I would not make false statement on the official document.

They didn't ask me anything about value at the post office. I just wrote 'moving to usa - personal stuff' on the paper they gave me. I asked if i had to be more specific but they said no ...

FIngers crossed !

Dear VJ members,

I recently bought a new road bike which I want to take with me when immigrating to the USA.

Since it is not in my possession for more than a year I can't claim it as a personal item that is tax exempt...

How much will the duty/custom/tax it be?

I can't find any information regarding the amount of money it'll cost me.

It's a trek road bike and was slightly more than 3000.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Cheers, Chris
