(Reuters) - With aid to victims of natural disasters running out, the Democratic-controlled U.S. Senate on Friday rejected a broad spending bill that had passed the Republican-controlled House of Representatives hours earlier.

As voting continued on the measure, Democrats had rounded up enough votes to defeat the bill, which would replenish dwindling disaster-aid funds and ensure the government can continue to operate past September 30, the end of the fiscal year.

Why are we paying individuals to clean up after mother nature wiped them out?

We are doing well in Vermont after our recent bad weather. The rock band "Phish", native to Vermont and who's members live in and around Burlington, did a concert last week and gave every penny of the ticket sales to Vermont residents. They sold the tickets ONLY in person in Burlington at the Flynn theatre to give Vermonters the best chance to help their own fellow Vermonters. The tickets were sold out in 2 hours and the line wound all around downtown starting the night before. Our own Green Mountain Boys have been supplying the isolated villages which by now are opened up again. We do not sit around and wait for the Federal government to do it.

This is why.

We are pretty much back to normal after 3 weeks, most areas were back to normal in one week. The GMBs were up in Chinooks as the clouds passed out of the area. Damn, they are good! No looting either. What kind of sh*t would one have to be to loot from one's own neighbors?

The National Guard handles disasters well, and uses state active duty time to get all those new tires, and other items the DoD are a little slow in providing. FEMA has always been slow to pay any contractors foolish enough to work with them, which is why they always wind up with the less than adequate materials and supplies. I worked a few earthquakes, floods, and wildfires during the 8-1/2 years I spent with the CAL-ARNG, and trust me, when FEMA promises to pay for everything, be prepared for major FUBAR. As long as it was the California OES or the CDF (now CALFIRE) as the lead organization, things went smooth, we got everything we wanted, and everybody got paid on time. FEMA, like many Federal agencies, should be dismantled.

We have a FEMA emergency office right across the street from our house at the fire station. They are taking applications for disaster relief funding for the flooding...that OCCURRED IN MARCH! Yeah, when all the Global Warming melted and flooded the homes on the lakefront.

Thank god I don't live in a distar prone area.

Are you sure?

THE SANTA ROSA EARTHQUAKES OF OCTOBER, 1969

On October 1, 1969, the city of Santa Rosa was severely shaken by two earthquakes. These quakes were distinctly felt throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, but it was in Santa Rosa where the most damage was done. The quakes were the most severe to hit that city since 1906, when Santa Rosa experienced catastrophic destruction, along with San Francisco.

Santa Rosa is 50 miles north of San Francisco and has a population of about 49,000, most of whom live in single family dwellings. It is the seat of Sonoma County and a center of light industry, agriculture and merchandising. The city is on the east side of Santa Rosa Valley, and intermontane valley of the Cost Ranges, bounded on the west by the Mendocino Range and on the east by the Sonoma and Mayacmas Mountains.

The astonished residents of Santa Rosa gave no thought to epicenters, magnitudes, or faults in those first moments when the onslaught of the quake at 9:56 p.m. plunged their pitching dwellings into darkness. Each individual lived those few moments intensely there in the overwhelming grip of the natural events which had so suddenly seized him.

First came the state of dumfounded bewilderment, before recognition that the increasing rumble of his vibrating dwelling and the clatter of falling books, dishes, lamps and even television sets meant an earthquake was occurring. Then, moments of fear as the tempo of shaking reached its peak and the thought of loved ones, falling debris, and injury entered his mind. Parents groped and staggered their way into darkened bedrooms to rescue their now awakened children. Persons stumbled to get outside onto their lawns and as they did so, saw the skyline flashing eerily as, in neighborhood after neighborhood, the lights flashed rapidly on and off before finally going out. Drivers were jerked about by automobiles suddenly bucking unmanageably, some even swerving into adjacent lanes.

Thank god I don't live in a distar prone area.

Neither do I. Vermont is one of the most disaster FREE areas in the country. Virtually no tornadoes, no earthquakes, no volcanoes, too far from the ocean for a full blown hurricane, it rains too much all year to have forest fires, very little mud to slide...it is all sand or rock, mild summers with no "heat waves" unless you count 92 degrees as a heat wave. Freakin' no sh*t cold in winter though.

This was very unusual. But by comparison...

A 4" snowfall statewide, which happens a LOT, costs more to clean up than this "disaster" and usually results in more deaths from traffic accidents, heart attacks, etc. Of course they plan for snowfall.

Other good news, Ben & Jerry's tossed in $1 million, so did Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Vermont Public Radio raised more than $600,000 in ONE DAY with donations. These are some companies that give back to their community, maybe consider that when you buy coffee or ice cream. And that is not to neglect the hundreds of other businesses that helped, loaned equipment, had bake sales, garage sales, etc. There are NO FEMA trailers here, all those people that lost homes have a real roof over their heads, thanks to neighbors, motels, hotels who all opened their doors to them.

Our very good friends in Quebec sent an ARMY of HydroQuebec service trucks (and nice trucks they are!) to help out. They were rolling down Interstate 89 in convoys of 20 or more at a whack. We get about 60% of our power from them. I joke about Canadians, but I am glad we have them as neighbors. Merci Beaucoup!

The thing that Ticks me off most and did from the start (And some here thought I was uncaring about it) is that now the biggest loss is coming from cancelled vacations and tourism for no reason other than blabbermouthed news shows that try to run up ratings with "disasters" The areas damaged are VERY SMALL and isolated and affect very few people, relatively. There is no reason to cancel vacation plans to Vermont, we are open for business and have never been closed. Now they are having to run ads in the NE area to let people know we are not destroyed. I'm getting pretty sick of 24/7 news stations that are just hoping for a disaster SOMEWHERE.

So basically..."Screw the government!"
