WASHINGTON – Almost 1 million young adults have signed on to new health insurance policies, government statistics released Wednesday show. Government officials credit the new federal health care law for making that possible.

...

As of September 2010, the Affordable Care Act allowed young adults up to the age of 26 to remain on their parents' health insurance plans. Previously, adult children could stay on their parents' plans only if they remained in college or lived in a state with laws similar to the Affordable Care Act. HHS estimated that 650,000 people would sign up for the new coverage.

However, through the end of March, the number of young adults ages 19 to 25 with health insurance rose by about 900,000 or 3.5%, from the same period in 2010, according to records from the National Center for Health Statistics.

The same report shows that the percentage of all adult Americans with health insurance increased from 77.7% to 78.5% in the same period, a change attributed to the rise in young adults with insurance.

...

An independent Gallup survey released Wednesday showed that insurance for young adults jumped from 71% in the first quarter of 2010 to 75% in the second quarter of 2011, which ended in June. Also, a U.S. Census Bureau report this month showed that insurance for young adults rose by 2% from 2010 to 2011.

The number of older Americans without insurance keeps growing as the economy stagnates, Kronick said, but the number of younger adults with insurance rose just as the law took effect.

Not sure how beneficial pushing adult kids into leeching off their parents is.

About as beneficial as teaching them to be non-confrontational and have time outs, etc.

You do realize your premium will go up when you add a spouse and again when you add a child, right?

Not necessarily. I have a buddy who works for a local government entity. He, his wife and their 4 kids are all covered with 0 taken our of his pay for it. They keep trying to get this to change with each new contract, but it still remains as a benefit.

Yes... I must admit I cannot see how this is a bad thing.

Most young people I know anyway are still not insured. Either their job pays too little, or their work doesn't offer health insurance, or they only work part-time, or they're in school but their parents lost employment and insurance.

Guess that is one reason that my premiums went up 60% last year and looking at a big increase again soon. Thanks Obama the Socialist.good.gif

We switched providers so the premiums 'only' went up by 35%! Luckily my company has covered the increase. I'm one of the rare fortunate few, however.

Even with insurance medical costs are still high!

If there is one thing that will ever drive me away from the US... it is health insurance. I hate every aspect of the medical system here. I've not even had better care or shorter waiting times than I did on the NHS to compensate for the increased costs.

So? The "young adults" are not paying for it - their parents are.

Not necissarily. My parents made me pay my portion of the premium when I turned 18, and still in high school.

The reason your premiums are so high is because you have a sh!tty plan. Kids being added to their parents plan has no bearing on your premiums. Do you really blame Obama for everything wrong in the world? Sorry, the stains in your pants aren't Obama's fault either.

Actually thats not true, his way of thinking is what passed laws which reduced the ability of laundry detergent to work as well as it used too.

What is true is, Libs are in every corner of your life and house.

Well it's not like they bought their own plans - they're just leeching off of their parents health insurance.

Not sure how beneficial pushing adult kids into leeching off their parents is.

for some of us the leeching is not true we make too much to qualify for state health care but not enough to pay the high expenses of anything that is surgical in the hospitals ........when it cost you over two hundred dollars just to see your doctor then add into the expense of MRI, cordial ecogram..and surgery to fix a hole you have wiped out any moneys that you had and are in the hole until you reach retirement

some of us pay to help our families.......my dads insurance might have gone up some but the company he works for absorbed it..if it had not i would have been more than willing to pay what ever the extra was.......not all young adults that take advantage of the health care issue are leeches

You would have died if it hadn't been for Obamacare which doesn't even go into effect until 2014?
