The East Coast— from the suburbs of Washington, D.C., to New England states — increased its stature as the USA's most affluent region over the past decade, new Census data show.

The dominance has frayed only slightly during the continuing economic downturn.

Seven of the 10 wealthiest states in 2010 were in the urbanized part of the East Coast, and most gained or held steady during the decade compared with the rest of the nation.

Maryland rose to No. 1 in affluence in 2010 — a $68,854 median household income — up from third in 2000. The state's suburban Washington, D.C. neighbor, Virginia, rose from 12th to 9th in affluence. And Washington, D.C., skyrocketed from 28th to 8th, the biggest jump of all when the District of Columbia is compared with the states.

Feeling the pinch of the financial crisis, New Jersey fell from first to second in affluence and Connecticut from second to fourth. Rounding out the 10 most affluent: Alaska, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Hawaii and California, which fell from 8th to 10th.
