I know there has been a lot of discussion about what really happened to cause the collapse of the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. This is a new article published in Science Daily that includes a consideration that was overlooked in the original examination - that the jets themselves introduced 30 tonnes of aluminum into each building. .

"At an international materials technology conference in San Diego, the audience heard senior scientist Christian Simensen of SINTEF Materials and Chemistry present an alternative theory based on the physics of materials of what happened in the towers when they were attacked by the aircraft."

Rather than explain the details here, I am including the link and saying it is an interesting theory with great plausibility, that certainly addresses some of the 'bad science' of the official explanation and explains some of the issues raised by the conspiracy theorists:

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

speaking as a structural steel inspector with training in such matters, i can say that the intense temperatures acheived in the jet fuel fire dramatically reduced the tensile and yeild strengths of the structural steel members in the floors involved in the conflagration. these floors thereby collapsed, and the momentum of their collapse exceeded the structural strength of the lower floors, in succession. the collapse should not be seen in one moment, rather as a series of moments, each unique and individual in occurence. slow motion fotography of the event demonstrates this explanation.

simply put, steel becomes plastic at temperatures above 1300*F. it is reduced in strength by 80% by 2250*F.
