Anyone here check this out yet?

I keep telling myself i will, but I haven't yet. My computers at home are a bit antiquated, so perhaps I'll give it a whirl at work. I'd strongly recommend running it on a VM since it's not even beta (it's a developer's build).

A friend of mine is running on his Mac with Parallels. I thing Metro UI is going to be great for a tablet. It really is a new and refreshing look, something different from iOS and Android.

I've downloaded it, but I haven't installed it yet. How much trouble can I get into if I run it on a separate partition? Could I mess up my main drive?

I downloaded it and attempted to install it using VirtualBox. It crashed VB in the same place, early on in the install, each time. Guess it needs some work.

You've got to be sh!tting me..I think I'll switch to Apple next time around. I'm due for an upgrade in about a year.

I doubt this is anything to worry about. It's a developers build, that is, pre-beta. For all I know it could be an issue with virtual box. Expect anything pre-beta to potentially have show stopping issues. Besides, anything apple is Hella overpriced. I'm sure win 8 will be fine.

I installed it on an old pentium-D/1GB/DDR1 system I had sitting out in the garage. Just to see how it ran.

So far it looks like Windows 7 after you get past the metro UI. Messed around with it for about half an hour or so, and have to say I don't like the metro UI at all. I couldn't find a way to reenable the old start menu, supposedly there is a registry hack to do this but I didn't try it. Hopefully they have the option to enable this in the final build.

It automatically detected and set up my USB wireless adapter (which Windows 7 didn't do), and then downloaded some drivers online. Found everything except the video card driver, which I couldn't find manually either. Installed sound drivers but couldn't windows audio service to start. Overall install was pretty quick, 10-15 minutes or so on an old setup like this was impressive. Start up and shut down is quick too.

I'm sure a lot will change before the release, but overall, nothing here so far that's worth paying the $200 or so to upgrade on a desktop computer. Maybe better on a laptop or tablet I guess.

Metro is ideal for a tablet with a touchscreen. I hope they have a way to toggle it on/off for desktop use. Right now it's kind of crazy to go from the desktop start menu back to Metro to select an app. There is a hack to change this, so hopefully the retail version will fix this.
