Renewing passport before visa interview yes or no?

Dear VisaJourney community,

We've tried looking up this information using the search function, but I can't seem to find one solid answer, so I'd like to put it in front of you guys and se if anyone can help us.

We recently completed and sent the DS156/156K and DS230 forms as well as the "visa interview checklist" to the embassy. So we are basically waiting for them to contact us for (hopefully) an interview date.

Now the thing is, that my (I am the beneficiary) passport is valid for another 8/9 months, so deending on when the interview date is, this could get kind of tricky in terms of still being valid for 8 months when receiving the visa.

To avoid this risk, I'd like to renew my passport BEFORE the interview, but I am now wondering if this will mess up the files they have on me. (Since I filled in my old passport number on everything up until now)

What's the smart thing to do here?

Do I renew my passport, bring both to the embassy and get the visa in my new passport?

It seems most logical, I'm just worried that the new passport numbers are gonna screw up the files with my old passport number.

Or (since it is 2011 after all) is it just a matter of, them checking my new passport and them seeing somewhere in "The System" that I have renewed my passport and that it went from "old passport number" to "new passport number"?

I know, I know a long and (probably) boring question, but I am one of those "worrying" people and this right now has me a little worried.

Thanks in advance for all your help, it is very much appreciated!!

Renew it bring both to the embassy, I had to do this because I had 6 months left on my passport. They said had I not done it ahead of time I would not have been issued a visa. They didn't even ask to see my voided passport and didn't even bring it up in the interview.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

You're just waiting for your interview date in the Netherlands. I don't really know but they might give you the interview date pretty quick. You probably want to check with others to see how long it takes them to get you the date. You'll need your passport for the interview. So I guess it depends how quickly they could renew your passport and get it to you. They say your passport should be valid for 6 months around when you enter the US.

So I guess it really depends, I mean they'll probably give you 2 weeks notice before your interview date. So I imagine even in the worst case you'll probably be able to get it renewed in the time for your interview. But you'll want to ask them how quickly they get your new passport to you.

NOA1 - 12/21/15

NOA2 - 04/18/16

NVC Receive - 04/29/16

NVC Welcome - 05/13/16

DS-261 - 05/14/16

AOS, IV PAID - 05/27/16

DS260 done - 06/10/16

Case Transferred to US Embassy in Riga Latvia at the end of October.

If you really want it, you'll find a way!

Thank you everyone for the fast (and clear) responses. Much appreciated!

I applied for a new passport, which will be ready this week, so I will have both passports to bring with me.

Now, this kind of leads me automatically in a new occurring problem linked to the whole passport renewal thing, I have to pay the "Visa processing fee" to the Embassy's bankaccount, stating my name and passport number. I will then have to show my bank statement at the interview as proof of payment.

So..... once again I ask the question, which passport number do I put up on the payment?

Do I wait until I get my new passport this week, THEN make the payment with the new passport number, or do I pay it and put up my old passport number still, since all forms have been filled in with the old passport number?

Thanks once again for (hopefully) taking your time to reading and answering my question :-)

Use the new passport number because the visa will be stamped on that passport.

They cant put a visa in a voided/canceled passport.
