No, you were talking about majority opinion being the deciding factor in what is right or wrong.

No slim, I am talking about linguistics. You may not know the difference between that and politics but there is a pretty big one.

So does anyone on here other than the suedo Catholic poster DFH think the Catholic Church is backing the homosexual agenda?

I recall a gay congressman who was offended by the term "homosexual". Sorry but that is what it is. If you shout it in a mean way, now the words becomes mean because of the sender? If you were to call me a flaming heterosexual, which I am, is that a bad thing? What if a sweet old lady said you are the nicest nazi she ever met, in the most endearing voice and tone?

I was raised being taught that gay meant extremely happy. A black man was a Negro (as in United Negro College Fund). Some folks are just thin skinned and find the slightest reason to get bent out of shape.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Actually it you who bring up the word so much and then make exceptions for it's use depending on accent.

:bonk:

California is always coming up with slang words. California is bad for the English language.

I guess now's a good time to remind all of you that I got "politely asked" not to use the word retard a few weeks ago.

According to the VJ mods, that's a slur. And if it is, then so is **. The basic reasoning I was given was "if it offends people than it's not authorized on VJ."

Personally I think all that PC ####### should go away and that's why we're being wussified as a nation but that's just my personal opinion and not supported by my actions here on VJ. In real life, I still use all those words because, well, they're just words.

The UNCF was incorporated in 1944, long after 1890. They still exist today (uncf.org). Go tell them they are racist. The NAACP uses the word "colored" and was founded in 1909, 19 years after 1890, and they too are still around. naacp.org. Go tell them what racists they are.

The word "negro" or "negroid" as the same as "caucasian" or "caucasoid." Like "black" to "white." It's a race. Identifying a race and identifying a racist are two different things. I have believed anyone is a better or worse person based on skin color. There are many factors that go into character, and if I have to stoop to picking on your race, gender, height, weight or other such factor then I an scraping for ideas.

I can see how ** can be used as a slur, but I can take the most innocent of words and make them sound negative with the proper context. Isn't that how "good" words become bad words anyway? ** is a genus. We are all **...sapiens. Remember from school, ** erectus, ** habilis, ** neanderthal...something or other? So saying ** means gay is a stretch, like saying gross means hideous. Gross means a dozen dozen. Grotesque means hideous.

So here everyone is getting bent out of shape for words which are perfectly normal, and for which they may not even know the proper definition.

Maybe I should have ended that specific comment with the [/sarcasm] tag.

I know the etymology of the word. However, people like Danno and Why_Me use the term "**" purely as a pejorative, so that argument is invalid.

Since you look for truth and inspiration and you like to "contextualize" scripture.

Put this New testiment passage in context, explain what it "really" means.

Romans 1

18For God's wrath is being revealed from heaven against all the ungodliness and wickedness of those who in their wickedness suppress the truth. 19For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God himself has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God's[l] invisible attributes—his eternal power and divine nature—have been understood and observed by what he made, so that people[m] are without excuse. 21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him. Instead, their thoughts turned to worthless things,[n] and their senseless hearts were darkened. 22Though claiming to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images that looked like mortal human beings, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles.

24For this reason, God delivered them to sexual impurity as they followed the lusts[o] of their hearts and dishonored their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged God's truth for a lie and worshipped and served the creation rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26For this reason, God delivered them to degrading passions as their their females exchanged their natural sexual function for one that is unnatural. 27In the same way, their males also abandoned their natural sexual function toward females and burned with lust toward one another. Males committed indecent acts with males, and received within themselves the appropriate penalty for their perversion.[p]

First of all, where in the world did you get this version of the text? Do you know who wrote it and to whom? I would assume you don't even have a basic theological understanding of scripture. You quote it out of context just like a Fundamentalist even though you seem to imply that you are Catholic (albeit a disgruntled one for not accepting Vatican II). St. Paul wrote this letter to the Romans primarily to spread the word that Christ died for everyone's sins, not just Jews. The early Romans were pagans who engaged in pagan rituals and so some of the early Christians in Rome were carrying over some of those practices. They were known to have orgies, animal worshiping, etc. The context (there's that word you despise) of that passage was referring to these pagan rituals.

Now, you're using Paul's reference to these 'unnatural' acts as a condemnation of homosexuality. If that was the Church's position, then homosexuality itself would be a sin. Also, if you are going to take everything Paul wrote throughout the New Testament, then you would endorse slavery among other shortcomings that Paul had. You see, Paul was a man and a sinner. He was not perfect and not every word he wrote was without error.

Again, what I said earlier - if you understand the real message of the Gospel, you would accept that God is all loving. The God of the Old Testament was a vengeful God full of wrath. The God of the New Testament is a God of mercy and love. All that is loving comes from God. All who experience love, experience Christ - whether they are Christian or not. Christ's love isn't exclusive, but inclusive (which is why we call ourselves Catholic - meaning universal). Two gay people, who truly love one another, are committed to one another - the love between them is from God. If we believe (which we Catholics do) that homosexuality isn't a choice, then the rational discernment of the real message of the Gospel is that these gay couples are experiencing Christ through their committed love for one another.

A co-worker got in trouble for referring to a Canadian as a Cannuck. I popped in and said it is NOT offensive, leave her alone. I even have a German friend we all call Kraut. It was his idea. I also have a friend in a wheelchair we all call Wheels, and a guy with a deformed arm that we call Flipper. This is not offensive, because no one is offended. They enjoy a good laugh at the terms. Of course when HR was visiting and I called him Flipper the HR rep totally freaked out because he "may" sue us. Heck I can sue anyone at any time! This is America!

At a softball game a few months ago the pitcher threw the ball and it bounced before it got to the batter. Someone shouted, "You throw like a girl!" is that offensive? The pitcher shouted back, "I AM a girl!" as she recovered the ball. All of a sudden, NOT offensive?

In the south I have heard the colorful use of language. A friend got cut off by a wild driver and she said "WELL BLESS HIS EVERLOVING HEART!!!" She was very mad, but that's her swearing. Offensive?

Now I'm offended at political correctness, but no one is going to bow down and stop that. :bonk:

The words you use tend to reflect underlying beliefs, or at least give an impression that you hold them. That's why people tend to steer away from them in public, certainly when they don't have a degree on anonymity to hide behind. Even bigots (except the most hard core types) don't want to be perceived that way. Who wants to look uneducated and thuggish?

Just because someone is ok with having a pejorative for a nickname doesn't mean all will. The concern that an HR department has is not with the person who laughs at the joke, but someone else who would be offended by it. I suppose if you work for a small company, that wouldn't be a problem. I wouldnt' use any of those nicknames, you're just filling your enemies clip with ammo for them.

Yes, you can sue anyone for anything in the United States. One of the truly horrible aspects of our legal system. I can literally go down to the courthouse and file a suit against you for annoying me over the internet, provided I had your true name. Some states luckily have frivolous lawuit statutes that allow a judge to fine you for being an idiot and filing such a lawsuit.

Part of the reason I enjoy VJ is the moderation. Most of those other forums where crude posts are made never seem to get past the point of name callng and fart jokes.

At least here we can engage in civilized discourse (with subtle name callling and the occasional fart joke).

And before you go jumping on me for wanting moderation and comparing that to how civilized society runs, keep in mind, I'm here by choice and I'm not forced to pay for it. There's also not an entire system of moderation and several other agencies to make sure they're modding correctly. If you'll note, the moderation actually works quite well because it's small and done by the community itself. Hmmm. If you'd like to go somewhere with this post, go there please!
