Nope. It's a fairness issue.

Everyone should pay their fair share. The dude in the rubbish bin isn't using up resources the way the welfare moms are.

Ok so no flat rate as you mentioned earlier then.

Flat rate for anyone who pays or takes money from the government. Is a mentally ill man who lives in a rubbish bin doing either of those?

Maybe he's a bad example. Let's put it another way. We've voted to give old people and invalids free money. We'd have to take their cut out of that free money. Same for welfare moms, etc. We'd simply take $2,000 off their "benefits" or whatever.

Actually, yes homeless mentally ill people do get checked by caregivers in many cities, though I think it comes out of either city or state budgets.

Old people paid in.

Invalids? I assume thats illegals and not a Gattaca reference to genetically inferior people.

And they shouldn't stop paying just because they're old.

I can't support the fair tax because it's not fair. What if you make less money than I do? You're going to pay less taxes. That's not fair.

The only fair way to do it is have everyone pay the same amount. "This year congress has legislated everyone will pay $2,340 in taxes." That's fair.

That's gonna be tough. We're gonna have to bring in about $7,500 bucks per person so I'm looking at a $30,000 tax bill just for the feds.

If Warren wants to pick up some of that for me he can just go right ahead!

Yes, this is what puzzles me too. I listened to Senator Fleming from Mississippi complaining about how his family, who lives on $600,000 would suffer because they would have to live on $400,000, if they were taxed more, when he owns all these Subways, etcetera that have made a profit of $6.9 million. How is he suffering? He states that with the higher tax he couldn't create more jobs for people. Well, what about out of that $6.9 million? He also stated how all the money is mixed together, his own income and that of the business. Well, I thought you weren't supposed to continue to put your own money into a business. It seems like a risky thing if your business fails. So I don't understand the arguments of these people who make way more and live off of way more than anyone else, even after taxes! Especially when you see how their tax rates have gone down, down, down, yet job development as also gone down, down, down. Anyway, the jobs he creates - Subway employees? Yes, I am sure they can live a comfortable, middle class existence on their incomes. What a benefit he is to our society. The people that work at the local Subway where I was living are also people who live in the projects, because that's where they could afford to live on their salaries.

If the government didn't spend as much we could reduce that number quite a bit.

For the umpteenth time, it's not the taxes that are the problem.

The middle class workers are being screwed the most.

The middle class pays only a few thousand bucks each. The "rich" pay, sometimes, several million. How is that screwing the middle class?

I'm American actually...the wife is from the UK.

That's why I asked if you were "British."

Why does it matter what anyone's wealth is or what they bring in each year when they're taxed?

Shouldn't we all pay the same? Or are rich people better?

Why don't you (or the project people) open up a Subway? Doctors Associates is always looking for more franchise opportunities.

? Fair tax (consumer tax) is when everyone pays the same rate...In a nutshell, there is no federal income tax but the sales tax on everything skyrockets to about 40% (groceries/gasoline/utilities/insurance/homes/alcohol/electronics/etc.).

$3 per gallon of gas = About $4

$100 in groceries = $130 to $140

24 pack of Bud jumps to $30

Your $150 cable bill = $200 to $215

Why does it matter what anyone's wealth is or what they bring in each year when they're taxed?

Shouldn't we all pay the same? Or are rich people better?

Sounds like you might be in favor of the fair tax!

If the fair tax was done as a national sales tax that would be fair. However, the government would have to learn to live like the rest of us and only spend what they take in.

Isn't that what the fair tax is? A 40% national sales tax?

If you make $50,000 a year you make $50,000 a year --- no taxes come out..

But for every $1 you spend 40 cents comes out*!!!

*I believe the rate is 34% but that doesn't include sales tax so I just call it 40%
