Hey guys,

I have received my green card (yay!, this past Friday), and so I was going to head over to the SSA office and have their system updated.

Now, when I first applied for a SSN, I used my EAD, and when I received the card, it had wording on it saying to present it with a DHS document AND the number started with an 8, which I found REALLLYY odd considering I read somewhere that SSNs don't start with 8s or 9s. My ITIN started with a 9, so maybe that number is reserved for those types of numbers.

Anyways.

I would like to update the SSA with my green card, so I was wondering how I go about doing that.

Do I have to fill out any forms? Will my SSN change? Will they give me a much less suspicious number that doesn't start with an 8 (lol)?

Thanks much!

numbers are issued once and for life, they will simply re-issue the card

what the heck...

why did I get an 8?

I'm from PA, it should start with a 1!

now everyone's going to think it's a fake number. aww.. :(, bring on the judgment.

Where did you read that SSNs don't start with 8 or 9? Relax.

Various sites on the web.

Not really freaking out, just kinda confused.

But hey, it's legit, so... why not, huh?

But for my other question... How do I go about updating the SSA's system?

Here's how they're picked: http://www.ssa.gov/history/ssn/geocard.html

See here for state codes:(http://www.ssa.gov/employer/stateweb.htm and here: http://socialsecuritynumerology.com/prefixes.php), and they're also picked on country.

Everything I've read say no SSN's should start with a 9, just ITINs. I would go in and ask about it. This here: http://www.usrecordsearch.com/ssn.htm actually mentions it shouldn't exist. Can't hurt to ask can it :)

They have changed how numbers are assigned. They are now random, and they are using higher numbers, but still not using 900-999 at this time. So, starting with an 8 should be okay. You can always ask when you go in to have the annotation removed from your card.

They changed to randomization on June 25, 2011, and these are the last dates showing the highest numbers they went up to then: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/employer/ssnvhighgroup.htm

SSNs are issued consecutively, which is why it's possible to connect the number to the issue date. My wife's SSN starts with a 4 and was issued in the '70s, mine is an early 6 and was issued early in 1992. If you have an 8, it's because they now have given out over 700,000,000 numbers since the system was introduced.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

No, SSNs are not issued consecutively. They used to be issued by state. Each state had a number of codes. If your wife was issued one with a 4, she got it somewhere in the "middle" of the country You can't connect it to a date. My husband just got his in 2010 and it starts with 1.

SSN Example:

1 2 3 - 4 5 - 6 7 8 9

Area Group Serial

If a Social Security number was assigned after 1972 and before 06/25/11, the area number is determined by the ZIP code of the mailing address provided with the original application.

As of 06/25/11, numbers are assigned from the pool of available numbers, but are still issued in order within the Area and Group from the available numbers. Numbers within the 800 Area range have recently started to be issued. Chances are that the 900 Area range numbers aren't going to be used, since ITINs start with 900 range numbers.
