If the Feds left everyone alone on a multitude of levels we'd be better off as a nation.

That’s a disingenuous statement. If the feds sent all criminals and ex-cons to a penal colony, we'd be better off as a nation. But that's not based on reality. The libertarian utopia of a virtually non-existent government works well on Little House On The Prairie, but not so well in reality.

No one said anything about no government at all. The Federal Government should be non-intrusive though and leave the majority of items up to the states. We might be a "United" Nation, but we all aren't the same and each state should be able to express that freely. Unfortunately everyone has been all about making us 'one' in past few decades that we forgot about what makes us a great nation; diversity. Diversity isn't just about different races. It's about different cultural backgrounds and ideas.

Everything is done in the name of 'protecting' the people, but the reality is the people can choose and protect themselves. The beautiful part about a diverse United States is that you have the option of moving to a state that better fits your ideology. Unfortunately the larger the Federal Government becomes, the more you lose the freedom of finding states that are different than the one you are in.

This isn't that difficult. You support those government agencies that benefit you and and rail against those that you perceive as a waste of money. At least be honest about your motivations.

I support government agencies that have a right to exist under the Constitution and rail against those that don't.

Postal Service? Authorized.

The libertarian utopia of a virtually non-existent government

We have 50 state governments and over 87000 local governments. We wouldn't turn into

a Somalia if the Federal government stopped sticking their nose in local matters

where it doesn't belong.

Where in the constitution does it specifically authorize the department of defense? The air force is not specifically mentioned in the constitution either. So following your logic, we don't need to defend our skies. Yes, I'm being absurd, but no more than you are.

The air force could be a specialized section of the Navy. There is no need for them to truly be their own branch of the military to be honest....

One of the explicit powers of Congress is to maintain a military. If they feel that requires a Department of Defense that's well within their rights to pass a law creating one.

That said,

"To raise and support Armies, but no Appropriation of Money to that Use shall be for a longer Term than two Years"

implies that a full-time army is, in fact, unconstitutional.

Or it may mean they want the appropriations to be extended (re-evaluated by the elected representatives of the people) at least every two years.

So where is your outrage at our nation maintaining a standing army?

you know what's funny about that is the standard military contract is 6 years (soemtimes 8). Technically speaking, no contract should be longer than 2 years, as there should be no guarantee that job will be there.
