Or perhaps the tech/dr was saying something like, "here's the little balls... here's the heart beat... oh, he's healthy, alright." And the parents didn't think they needed to ask "are you sure he has both legs and arms?"

Do you make it a habit of second-guessing medical professionals? I know I have no problem with it but most folks still think the doc's word is gospel. He's a doctor!

Trust me, limbs are very very apparent in an ultrasound image. The absence of them.... just as apparent. A parent who didn't notice was simply not looking or not paying attention.

Or didn't know what to look for.

How could the parents have intent before they knew?

Did they sit in the ultrasound with fingers crossed saying, "Ooohh, I hope the tech and doctor forget to tell us the baby has no limbs. I mean, I clearly see it but if they don't say it in the next two minutes, we're out of here and we're suing. Fingers crossed!"

It's not like when the cashier forgets your receipt and you get a free small fries.

Seriously, I don't know if you just love to bicker THAT much, or are really that ignorant to compare an ultrasound tech not noticing the unborn child has 3 limbs missing to a fast food worker forgetting fries. I'm facepalming for you.

Intent as far as perhaps they previously told the doctor they would consider aborting. Intent as far as the doc and the US tech being pro-life to the point of omitting this information to prevent an abortion. Dur.

It's not the parents' responsibility to ask where the limbs are in order for the tech/dr to notice 75% of them are missing.

edit for typo

You're right. It's not their responsibility. But to not notice 3 out of 4 limbs are missing is weird and makes me wonder about the parents.

Well true, but it's even weirder for the tech and dr. I honestly cannot wrap my head round this one.

That is even weirder, yes.

I remember about a week after my daughter was born I had the thought that hey I never counted her fingers and toes. I wonder if the doctors would have said anything if the counts were off. So I counted. 5, 5, 5, 5. Nice!

I'm saying "for the sake of argument" the intent doesn't matter.

That's why you ask questions. Hey doctor, where are the legs?

Isn't the natural assumption that the kid has all his limbs?

How many questions is one supposed to ask during an ultrasound?

It's not the parents' responsibility to ask where the limbs are in order for the tech/dr to notice 75% of them are missing.

Bingo.

That is even weirder, yes.

This goes to show that the natural assumption is everything is OK until told otherwise. In the case of the parents, they weren't told anything was wrong.

Is that why deaf kids go to special school?

Not all deaf kids do and when they do it's because they communicate differently. Personally I wouldn't mind all students in the District learning Sign Language. FWIW, Gabby will most likely be attending your coveted "normal" classes by Kindergarten or First Grade at the latest.

Look, I'm not trying to say anyone with any impairment is any worse of a person. However, even something slight, like allergies, costs money to medically care for and in the case of most parents, it's something they have to pay for or figure out a way to pay for.

The responsible thing to do is NOT have children that you can't pay for be that medical or otherwise. The parents in this thread were trying to do just that and were wrongfully advised by their medical staff.

Actually, you are saying exactly that. It's ignorant to look down on someone just because they have physical difference. If you haven't had a child with a "disability" in your life you would be well served to get to know one. For the most part they take nothing for granted and are more than willing to work twice as hard where needed.

English is ignorant?

It's not trolling when you detect those who have emotional responses vs. those who are clear headed. I post things to elicit a response because I'm here for entertainment, not to save the world.

No, English isn't ignorant. Trolling is and selecting your words to intentionally elicit a response for your personal entertainment as opposed to advancing the thread discussion is TROLLING.

As for the Wrongfully Advised part, I guess the parents never bothered to look at the Ultrasound images? Is there no such thing as personal responsibility anymore?

I guess we should sue the doctors for not knowing that Gabby was deaf before he left the hospital?

So you can opt out of questions but others can't?

I'm not sure why you wouldn't answer. Think it over. What would you do if you didn't have insurance? Would you sell brownies and lemonade to raise the $300,000?

I can't answer and can choose to opt-out for the simple fact that I would never put myself in the position of having kids without insurance. I don't see how you can't understand that.

I haven't had insurance for several years so I'm not sure if they do it now but back when I had it the standard procedure was to cover the minimum possible and deny claims for everything else. While their insurance may cover prosthesis I doubt it covers one every year or two - what a growing boy would need.

Actually, durable medical supplies are generally covered for replacements based on such things as average live expectancy of the item which includes a child out growing it and needing a larger size.

I must have really good insurance because we've never had a problem getting equipment approved and even were covered for extra rechargeable batteries that are smaller in size (and cost twice the standard rechargeable battery) because the audiologist agreed with us that at his age the normal batteries are simply too heavy for his little ears.

Additionally, it's likely they were ill-equipped to deal with a limbless child and will have to relocate and outfit their new location (and vehicles, etc.) with special equipment. They probably will have to hire "help" to shuttle the young lad to and fro while he's learning to walk and use those prosthetic arms and what not.

Seriously? OMG, my wife and I are really missing the boat on this one. I guess we should be crying about needing different style of alarm clock & fire/smoke alarms for our house. Ironically this equipment works for "regular" folks also just has added alert methods for deaf persons. How do you outfit a car for a limbless child? Did you even think about that? You are reaching rather far.

Again I guess there is no such thing a personal responsibility. As a family we have come together to support Gabby. You don't need to worry because we'll never even ask you to care one little bit about him.

There are a number of vets returning from war in pretty much the same physical condition, are they too a burden no one wants?

I hope not.

So how much do your repub and tea party politicians want to fund for their care? Are you saying YOU will advocate for the higher taxes decent care for them may require? Time to put your money, and your votes, where your mouth, or your post, is! I personally support the liberal democratic position that we owe these vets the best care and the rest of us have to pay the taxes needed. What about YOU?

Not all deaf kids do and when they do

So "some" kids need extra attention. Is it possible this kid, with only one limb, will need some?

Actually, you are saying exactly that. It's ignorant to look down on someone just because they have physical difference. If you haven't had a child with a "disability" in your life you would be well served to get to know one. For the most part they take nothing for granted and are more than willing to work twice as hard where needed.

I'm not looking down on anyone. I'm acknowledging the fact that they're not normal and require special considerations and, more often than not, more money to care for.

I base this on first-hand knowledge of an amputee.

No, English isn't ignorant. Trolling is and selecting your words to intentionally elicit a response for your personal entertainment as opposed to advancing the thread discussion is TROLLING.

Getting a response from you lets me know how attached you are to an issue and how easy or hard it will be to change your position. (See below.)

As for the Wrongfully Advised part, I guess the parents never bothered to look at the Ultrasound images? Is there no such thing as personal responsibility anymore?

Is it the parents responsibility to read the ultrasound and detect any abnormalities? I'd argue that it's not. It seems the court agrees with me.

I guess we should sue the doctors for not knowing that Gabby was deaf before he left the hospital?

If they were negligent, sure. But if they weren't, you'd probably have a tough case sense hearing isn't one of those things that's automatically detected.

And since this is your point - Why didn't you check before you left the hospital? Don't you have any personal responsibility?

I can't answer and can choose to opt-out for the simple fact that I would never put myself in the position of having kids without insurance. I don't see how you can't understand that.

It's not that I don't understand it's that you're not answering the question. What would you do to get $300,000 for your child's medical expenses if you didn't have insurance?

What if the money simply was not there?

Actually, durable medical supplies are generally covered for replacements based on such things as average live expectancy of the item which includes a child out growing it and needing a larger size.

I must have really good insurance because we've never had a problem getting equipment approved and even were covered for extra rechargeable batteries that are smaller in size (and cost twice the standard rechargeable battery) because the audiologist agreed with us that at his age the normal batteries are simply too heavy for his little ears.

You probably do have really good insurance. Many folks do not.

Seriously? OMG, my wife and I are really missing the boat on this one. I guess we should be crying about needing different style of alarm clock & fire/smoke alarms for our house. I guess you've never seen a wheelchair?

Most cars don't have ramps right up to them so it's important to get a lift-equipped van or something similar. Since you brought up the prosthetics the child would most likely need and have to learn to walk in they'd need to go to therapy quite often. Is mom going to quit a full-time job so he can do that? Is dad going to be able to support that endeavor? Is insurance going to pay for the vehicle and modifications?

For someone who supposedly "knows about this stuff" you're not being very open minded.

And as far as caring about your little Gabby, I'd have no problem donating a couple bucks to help you out. But don't tell my boss he has to give it to you straight out of my paycheck without my consent. See the difference?

It's odd to have this fall under 'personal responsibility' for fault with the parents. The parents are not trained to read ultrasounds. That is not their job. Having a child with 3 out of 4 limbs missing and not being told is most definitely the fault of the doctor and the US tech. You cannot see deaf on an US. To also think that a child with 1 limb does not have special needs in terms of financial support is kinda odd. I realize Slim is being confrontational here, but let's stick to the pertinent facts.

Interesting, I don't recall our techs ever saying that.

And I always forgot to ask!
