More insipid Dannologic™. Danno, if you found out that your unborn son would be gay, would you abort it? Don't worry, that's a rhetorical question, I think we all know the answer. I think the hospital absolutely had a duty to notify her of this. But I find her lawsuit callous.

Why would it be a question at all - he's alive and has the money to be supported his entire life.

You dont think that the kid would ask questions to why they would of aborted him had they known he was handicapped?

Really? Is this kid going to take care of himself and contribute to society?

You may have no problem paying for things, but I don't want to pay for kids' healthcare. It's not my job to take care of other peoples' kids. If you want to take care of kids you can donate as much money as you want to charities that do so. But don't make me pay for it through the strong arm of government.

Our kids are the future, like it or not they are all our responsibility. Yes the parents are first and foremost responsible but a kid should not be neglected because they have a stupid mom or dad. I think as a society we have come to this conclusion so like it or not the you will be helping to pay for these expenses.

In all seriousness, if you really want to help kids you'd get rid of government intervention. It costs the government 10X as much to do something the private sector can do and when you're talking things like donations, almost 100% of your money could go to the intended recipient.

I agree the government is not the best option but they do have to be part of the equation. This is a complicated issue and my main point is that our kids(as a country) need to be top priority. There is plenty of people outside the government that help children in these situations the problem is there isn't enough people.

How will they explain to their son when he is older all the money they received for his wrongful life?

Not to worry they will spend it alll , before he knows about it

WOW! Really? "Invalid Kid"?

My 4 year old son is deaf. He just recently started hearing (10 month ago) thanks to Cochlear Implants. The cost was well over $300,000.00! Don't worry you didn't pay a single penny towards the cost as I'm a responsible adult who has always provided Medical Insurance for my family.

FWIW, my son in no more "invalid" than anyone else is.

Not anymore, anyway.

For your information, I was using the term "invalid" in the traditional English sense of the word. I specifically chose that word because of the emotions it would conjure up among some of you. You hear invalid and you equate it to "not worthy" when in reality, it means something closer to "not as able as the rest of us."

I don't think it's my job to pay for your son. I'm glad you were responsible. Now, what would you have done had you not had insurance?

BTW, this kid can overcome his physical deformities. Prosthetic limbs are much more common and functional than they were just a couple of decades ago. If his parents have medical insurance then the prostheses and therapy for him to learn to use them are available at little to no cost.

Being awarded millions of dollars in this case is stupid. How much to think will remain once the selfish parents are done spending?

I'm not saying he can't. I'm not saying he's not going to be a valuable and contributing member to society.

But, what I am saying is there is a HUGE cost associated with raising a child such as this and the parents were responsible enough to realize they didn't have the money to do so. They would've aborted the pregnancy had they known. The medical folks were negligent and thus they must pay for the care of the kid.

Besides if they were so concerned then why didn't they go for the amniosynthesis? I detects a lot more than a simple ultrasound.

Sounds like they weren't concerned at the time since "all was well."

You dont think that the kid would ask questions to why they would of aborted him had they known he was handicapped?

You don't think he'll understand that he's not "normal" and all those trips to the doctor aren't free?

Our kids are the future, like it or not they are all our responsibility. Yes the parents are first and foremost responsible but a kid should not be neglected because they have a stupid mom or dad. I think as a society we have come to this conclusion so like it or not the you will be helping to pay for these expenses.

I don't like it. I don't like the fact that stupid parents cost me money.

In this case, it sounds like the parents were actually very smart.

Here we go again. If the government isn't the best option, why do we let them do it?

Also, if there are plenty of people then how are there not enough people? Do you mean people volunteering? Or.... do you mean "there aren't enough people to pay for it all?"

Nice admission of TROLLING this thread intentionally stirring the pot with ignorant words selected to inflict & incite emotional responses.

For me not having Insurance simply isn't an option so there is no point in answering that question now is there.

Do these parents not have medical insurance? If they do then the boy is (and has been) covered since his birth. So how do you justify the 4.5 million? Let me guess, because they'll have more doctor's visits?

If they're so upset about it then why don't they just abandon him to the state. Don't most states allow that now? I'd bet they only kept him because of the potential multi-million dollar windfall.

I want to also comment on the whole Ultrasound thing:

I've seen many Ultrasounds in my life, some of them were as clear as photographs and some made muddy water look clear.

In any case I've never known a pregnant woman who didn't actually get prints of a few Ultrasound images.

If the images were clear then how the heck didn't the parent notice something off in the images and question then Doctor?

If the images weren't clear and the parents were really that worried then why didn't they seek further testing (which in one case they specifically declined)?

They are idiots...

I am anti-abortion, but come on....having a sonogram and seeing 3 limbs missing? How could that be missed? That was gross negligence...and regardless what the parents would have done, they had a right to know.

btw, I take umbrage with calling a child 'invalid'. It's rude and unnecessary

Seriously. The limbs are so obvious in ultrasound imaging. Techs do miss the genitalia (or get it wrong) or smaller deformities but how can you miss the kicking and the thumb sucking? They are the most obvious things even to a lay person like myself.

Sounds like someone rubbed some jelly, ran a wand and didn't bother taking their eye off the TV.

Also... was the mother/father not watching the screen? Did neither of them not ask for prints?

This whole thing sounds wrong.

Is that why deaf kids go to special school?

Look, I'm not trying to say anyone with any impairment is any worse of a person. However, even something slight, like allergies, costs money to medically care for and in the case of most parents, it's something they have to pay for or figure out a way to pay for.

The responsible thing to do is NOT have children that you can't pay for be that medical or otherwise. The parents in this thread were trying to do just that and were wrongfully advised by their medical staff.

Nice admission of TROLLING this thread intentionally stirring the pot with ignorant words selected to inflict & incite emotional responses.

English is ignorant?

It's not trolling when you detect those who have emotional responses vs. those who are clear headed. I post things to elicit a response because I'm here for entertainment, not to save the world.

For me not having Insurance simply isn't an option so there is no point in answering that question now is there.

So you can opt out of questions but others can't?

I'm not sure why you wouldn't answer. Think it over. What would you do if you didn't have insurance? Would you sell brownies and lemonade to raise the $300,000?

Do these parents not have medical insurance? If they do then the boy is (and has been) covered since his birth. So how do you justify the 4.5 million? Let me guess, because they'll have more doctor's visits?

I haven't had insurance for several years so I'm not sure if they do it now but back when I had it the standard procedure was to cover the minimum possible and deny claims for everything else. While their insurance may cover prosthesis I doubt it covers one every year or two - what a growing boy would need.

Additionally, it's likely they were ill-equipped to deal with a limbless child and will have to relocate and outfit their new location (and vehicles, etc.) with special equipment. They probably will have to hire "help" to shuttle the young lad to and fro while he's learning to walk and use those prosthetic arms and what not.

Or is insurance covering all of that?

If they're so upset about it then why don't they just abandon him to the state. Don't most states allow that now? I'd bet they only kept him because of the potential multi-million dollar windfall.

When did it say they were so upset?

It's likely they love their child and were quite shocked when he came out without limbs. Were you not shocked when your son couldn't hear? Did you think about abandoning him? I doubt they did either.

It's one thing to make a calculated judgement based on all information. Quite another to be thrust into a situation you have no control over because someone else was negligent.

It does. It also sounds to me like there might have been intent there. I mean I really can't understand how a tech AND doctor could miss this. Or they are anti-abortion to the point of omitting information? I dunno. Of course I am speculating, but I can't wrap my head around this one at all.

Even if that were the case, how passive were the parents? I can't wrap my head around that. They had to quite literally never look at the ultrasound images or look and not ask any questions at all. Who does that??

How could the parents have intent before they knew?

Did they sit in the ultrasound with fingers crossed saying, "Ooohh, I hope the tech and doctor forget to tell us the baby has no limbs. I mean, I clearly see it but if they don't say it in the next two minutes, we're out of here and we're suing. Fingers crossed!"

It's not like when the cashier forgets your receipt and you get a free small fries.

As for the doctor being anti-abortion, you're implying they'd assume the parents would automatically abort a fetus with 3/4 limbs. Most of the anti-abortion folks I know are pretty "we have options, let's discuss them" type folks. Churchy, even. I doubt they'd just automatically assume the parents would immediately opt for abortion. I really, really, reaaaaaaallly doubt they'd see something like missing limbs and just "whoops" that one.

Even if that were the case, how passive were the parents? I can't wrap my head around that. They had to quite literally never look at the ultrasound images or look and not ask any questions at all. Who does that??

Or perhaps the tech/dr was saying something like, "here's the little balls... here's the heart beat... oh, he's healthy, alright." And the parents didn't think they needed to ask "are you sure he has both legs and arms?"

Do you make it a habit of second-guessing medical professionals? I know I have no problem with it but most folks still think the doc's word is gospel. He's a doctor!

That is pretty much the definition of trolling.

Trolling very seldom involves the topic at hand. If you'll notice, my emotion-provoking posts are OT.
