UKers, beware of CANADA!

My fiance was given all sorts of instructions after she was approved, one item of interest was to NOT travel through Canada. I don't know if everyone has this issue or was our case an anomaly for some reason, but for those folks shopping for plane tickets that's something to consider. If anyone has more info as to why, it's be nice to know about.

Perhaps the guy did not like Canadians?

A lot of flights go over Canada, particularly those to the west coast.

I meant don't stop in Canada. If you stay in the air I think you're fine. :-)

Specifically they said if you stop in Canada then the entire visa is void. We asked about Germany, that's okay to travel through.

All they do is cut down trees, eat their lunch and go to the lavatory.

That is complete BS. In fact you would likely do your POE at the Canadian airport prior to boarding the flight to the US.

Never heard of that. No way would it void the visa. Perhaps it was actually a warning not to cross over into Canada after she enters on her K1. She wouldn't be allowed back in on a K1 visa. It is void when she uses it to enter the US. One use only.

That makes sense, but why pick on Canada, we're closer to Mexico.

Maybe he's not up on geography. Maybe it was a general example and not case specific. It applies to any foreign country.

Agreed - that makes no sense. Its up to the CBP officers as to whether or not they admit you on your visa. Why they would care that you had a layover in Canada is beyond me. Have never heard of that being an issue before.

I'm pretty sure if you transfer in Canada you don't even need to clear Canadian passport control....maybe a land crossing after a flight would be a little different, but I don't see what difference it would make since Canadian K-1s do it all the time

I'm from Buffalo, NY-- my husband and I fly Canadian Affair to go back for visits. They're cheap tickets and it's a direct flight Glasgow to Toronto, then one of my family members will drive up to get us. I know it really seems to ruffle customs' feathers doing things this way. There is no way, when we get this visa, that I'll be traveling back that route I can only imagine the hassle. I'd rather endure the 3 flights and save my nerves.

Which Customs agents does it bother? What do they say? Those who live on the border cross all the time to use each others' airports. The Peace Bridge officers process visas all the time. I'm not sure why you think you'd be hassled? Sorry. I guess I'm not understanding what the issues are.

It's the Canadian customs at the airport that seem to have an issue. They've asked very pointedly several times why we have flown to Canada when I am an American who plans on going to America. They asked how much money we saved in flying with a Canadian rather than a US airline. Umm.. just a general attitude of distaste with us essentially using Canada as a "stepping stone" between countries. I've never had an issue at the Peace Bridge, it just seems to be at Lester B. Pearson.

I suppose if you want to get down to brass tacks, I have never once had a major problem getting in or out of either country. It's really just a personal preference. I, for visa purposes would just feel more comfortable having the US be our point of entry from the UK.
