My fiancee and I are about to be married this coming weekend and we are working on the paperwork for the AoS to file after we are married. We filed for her SSN on 8/26 and still have not yet received her SSN card, so is this normal to wait so long to get the card, because her receipt says it should only take two weeks? Also, must we have the SSN to fill out the paperwork for the AoS, since it asks for it, or should we just file without having her SSN? I called the Social Security Administration office today and they said it could take as long as six weeks for DHS to issue a clearance before they would issue the SSN card, so this all has me confused and concerned at this point. Do we need to file our AoS documents before her I-94 expires?

Thanks in advance for any help/insight anyone can lend! :)

No, AOS does not need to be filed before her I-94 expires.

Don't need SSN for AOS...and everything takes a lot longer than what they say or you may think. Two weeks for SSN would be rather fast, but don't worry if you don't have it yet, it will come soon enough.

It depends on the office and the state you appplied at . My wife had her First SSN in less than 2 weeks after she arrived when we applied . After we were married --we went back and had her name changed on the SS Card . It took 1 week .

It is not required to have the SSN to file AOS .

It is highly advised to file AOS before the I-94 expires .Some persons filed long after the I-94 expired .Good luck .

You don't need SSN for AOS. And quite frankly, had I known the SSN is not necessary before getting married, I wouldn't have applied for one in the first place. I would have applied for a SSN after getting married, so that way I could have the new name on it. I did that anyway... So after getting the GC it will be my 3rd trip to SSA to remove "available for work with DHS authorization". Gross!

So... no SSN is required for AOS. And you should file for AOS asap, but if her I-94 expires, that's no big deal. Just don't let too much time pass before sending your paperwork.
