Good afternoon Vj'ers,

I have seen posts regarding getting a drivers licenses in the states, but i havent seen any definative opionions as to weather its benificial to get one first in the Philipines. Does it help at the DMV here to already have one? Is the training in the Philipines even worth it? Is it a benifit when getting insurance, rather than saying your a new driver? So if anyone has any experiences I would love to hear them.

Thanks as always

I dont think gettting DL in the Phils will have any advantage/bearing/significance if you want to get DL in the US..The only thing you can do is while you are still in the Phils, you can apply for DL there, then apply for International DL, in that way you will be mobilize when u get here in the USA and you can drive around using that Int'L DL while waiting for your GC. But i think its only valid for 6mos...Hope that helps somehow...

In preparation, I'd take private drivers lessons and download the state's DMV drivers handbook and study the regs and rules. You'd then be ready to test and get your license upon the green card issuance. This is our approach to it since we're not really near public transit.

Philippines driver's license? No, it is not beneficial.

International driving permit, issued in the Philippines? Yes, it can be beneficial.

My wife had some driving "training" in the Philippines. IMHO, it was absolute garbage. Why? Because no one follows the rules of the road. Traffic lights, pedestrian crossings are all decorations in the Philippines. They look nice, have pretty colors...but don't really mean anything.

I told my wife it's great she learn the handling of a car (ie steering, braking, etc), but DO NOT adopt their way of driving. If she brings that mentality of driving to the States, she will get cited for sure. She was able to drive in Washington state, using her International Driving Permit, until she took the road test. During that time, I taught her the proper way of driving here in the States. Here in Washington state, the Dept of Licensing does NOT honor driver's licenses from foreign countries.

I hope this helps you some.

In Pennsylvania you do not need to get or have your green card to apply for your license, you just need a marriage certificate and a valid unexpired I-94. In California I think I saw a post you need a green card to get a license.

Which means we had to apply for a SS#, get married and pass the test all before the I-94 expired. Each state is different so good luck!

Is it a benefit when getting insurance, rather than saying you're a new driver?

When I added Chinook to the insurance policy, my insurance agent didn't ask whether Chinook had any previous driver licenses or any driving experience. He asked for her name, birthdate, and her Washington State driver license number. It's more than likely that my insurance company determines their rates by age, credit score, and any tickets or accidents.

I can say after seeing manila and being in mahal ko area in mindanao was amazing. The white line is a driving lane. I never knew it until there. Also, one lane roads are two lane roads... berms are passing lanes. rural driving can be scarier more then city driving. Manila scared me less then being in the Agusan Del Northe or Misamis Oriental areas riding on multicabs, jeepneys or buses. Many times I just wanted to kiss the ground thankful I made it to the destination safely and in one unharmed piece.

International driving permit from PI is my saving grace. It saved me from getting bored and staying home while my husband was at work. I was able to go around the state using it without any problem for one year. But, of course my husband was there to guide me on my 1st tries. Until it expired, then I was ready to take the road test and the computer test. I also used my waiting time (for visa) to take driving lessons while in the Philippines. At least I wasn't ignorant on how things work and did not start from zero when I get here. Of course,I had to learn the rules, especially the STOP signs. :)

You might get a better answer if we knew the state in which you live. Every state has different rules. I suggest reading YOUR state's DMV site to get the most correct info.

In AK, you can drive on a PI DL for up to 90 days, unless you become a resident of the state, then you must get an AK DL within 30 days.

HTH!!

PA allows you to drive with an Intl DL for a year so yes, it helped me a lot
