Not really all that reliable at all. Some people have their cases 'touched' quite often, other people never see a touch until they get an approval, and other people still say "Initial Review" long after they've been approved.

It's not a bad thing to check every so often, but don't become obsessed with it or get upset if things don't change :)

I got a NO1 in late August. Nothing showing on the the web site this week so I called them on Monday or Tuesday. She told me that the web site data is not updated recently. They have had problems with it for two months. At that point, I could hear her typing on her keyboard and since I am a software professional.. I could tell she was checking the main system, the ones with the green screens, the old reliable ones that feed the data to the web site. After about 30 seconds.. she said "Yes, you are in the system. You are being processed."

The bottom line is the web data is not getting updated . They are having problems with it and someone is working on it but who knows when and if it will be fixed. I would probably try to get through and make sure they have it in the main system but from there all you can do is wait and maybe check the web site every couple of weeks to see if they get it fixed.

Actually.. if you get a letter from them with a NO1, you are in the system.

Yes, and then after that it is not consistent - a touch just means it has been scanned but it could just show that it has been moved from one desk to another. As has been said, some people go right through to approval and the system shows it is still in initial review, so its not really reliable. By all means check from time to time but don't stress if there is no update shown.

Mar 2011 - After 5mths denied for lost docs - Attempts to follow up failed. Mar 18 2012 - I-129F sent - No sign of NOA1 but they have banked the check...Jul 24 - Update - USCIS has located our file
Infopass Apt - they sorted through everything - our 2011 and 2012 file keep getting mixed up - getting us a Case# (still waiting) Dec- Infopass Appt- expecting to get a case # in about a week ..Still no Case number

Mar 2013 Infopass - advised file was in a box somewhere, and it would be quicker for us to refile. Life gets in the way... New petition submitted July 2014 .

Good thing you came here!! If my fiance and I had followed what the USCIS said, he would have been over here illegally and banned from the states. Stick with VJ, not USCIS!
