Assuming you live in NJ that is the state that is most important

If you have recently moved to New Jersey, you must transfer your out-of-state license within 60 days of your move or before your current license expires, whichever occurs first. Your license cannot be transferred to a New Jersey license if you are under 18 years old. Instead, you must complete the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program requirements.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Thanks for your reply, i do not hold US driving license, after reading a bit i think only international license can make it for one year while i pass NJ driving license.

Your insurance may be much higher is you use an international licience. What I read from the part I included earlier is that 60 days after you move to NJ you are expeceted to have a NJ licience no matter where you came from originally. An older VJ member got caught in CA in the frist 2 weeks ( CA gives you 10 days) and got a very expensive ticket.

Insurance might be an issue. No-one wanted to insure me on an international licence (of the local groups) but were fine once I got my learners permit. I got the permit so I could get on insurance and once I was on insurance i took the driving portion to get my full licence. I could have gone straight to full licence but I felt better knowing I was on insurance and able to practice a bit more in the truck my husband got for me.

You can try and get a licence before your get your EAD/GC but some states won't allow that because they need proof of a certain period of lawful status before granting a licence.

Read here: http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Licenses/LicensesNon-Citizens.htm The most interesting part is if you get a statement from your driving authority in your home country explaining your driving history you don't need to do the annoying graduated licensing part. http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Licenses/AdultRoad.htm which even if you're over 21 you need a driver over 21 next to you for at LEAST 3 months to supervise you... fun :S

I am 30+ and holding 7yrs no claim bonus from the UK, this might decrease the insurance significantly otherwise maybe i can just rent a car, I'll get the learners permit anyway as i have to get full NJ driving license asap.

Thanks for the link and valuable information guys.
