Oujda!! Abedines grandmother lives there along with his aunt and uncle!! He is actually in Oujda this week and will be back Thursday!! I can't wait to visit and he's taking me to saidia because I LOVE the ocean!

Ah, Saidia is nice, but it will be cold in December :( and probably without many people, but I went there too during the off-season. There is a nice pizza place as you enter town. It is where the road splits. You will find people polite in Oujda, if you go there. Very nice and clean city, and also conservative. I looked at djellabas when I was in Oujda, and I really liked this one, until I saw it was $80 :dead:, I had already spent my money on renting a car, so maybe next time!

did you have to do anything special for driving in morocco? or renting a car? ive mentioned it to abedine but he just talks about taking the train everywhere and taxis. didnt know which would be cheaper! he surprised me with saidia, all i talk about is the ocean. i dont really care for like swimsuits and laying out but im a huge ocean conservationist so i love being around it and helping keep it safe/clean in anyway.

Did u

Thanks for info!! How did u travel with basket?? That sounds beautiful!

Yes i did travel with a purse that had a zipper if that is what you are asking..unfortunately depending on where you go and if its crowded, there are pick-pocketers..i was in Rabat,Marrakech,Casablanca,Essaouira. The basket, i had to assemble in Morocco because i couldnt get thru security without having them tear it apart. The food is amazing there! Best of luck on your trip,it really is a once in a lifetime opportunity..atleast it was for me :)

Well, it is a bit expensive. I think for 10 days it cost me about $250.00, but then I rented in the summer, and it cost me about the same amount for just 5 days! The first time I rented from the airport. Also, it's better to get the smuggled fuel, which you find a lot on that side of the country. It is much cheaper. Abedine will know about that. If you can take trains, do it, I think it is probably way cheaper. I didn't do anything special to drive there. Got stopped a few times at roadblocks and questioned, but I think it was more out of curiosity. The first time I let my SO talk to the officer, because they spoke Arabic. The second I answered in French, but really it was no big deal. However, you have to make sure you follow the stop signs and they don't always look like stop signs LOL. Also, there are certain cars that are jacked up in the back, which are the smugglers' cars, and they don't stop for anybody, so if you are on a narrow road, and someone has to get over, it better be you, because they won't, it is like playing chicken! If they are speeding behind you, let them pass. That is great that you are a conservationist, but you will be shocked by the trash all over Morocco. They just throw things out the window. They don't have this awareness yet. So it is all over the countryside. It will probably be cold and windy, as it was when I was there in April. You will need to bundle up a bit.

I had a most unusual experience. I lost my wallet the first day in Rabat. It was my fault, I dropped it out of my purse. But I didn't realize it until I left the restaurant and at least 1 1/2 hours later, we went back there and asked, and finally found that someone had returned it to the cashier! I thought that was so wonderful. I never had a bad experience with any Moroccans at all. They were so polite and helpful to me. However, I would agree with you! Be careful. My SO's brother had his wheel stolen off his motorcycle. Always best to keep your important documents close to your body, like maybe in a special pouch you can put around your waist or your neck, inside your clothes, and let Abedine buy things when you are not immediately right there next to him, so they will charge the Moroccan rate!

thanks for the info!!! i reall appreciate it more than you'll ever know. it means to world to me to find others (a family) like this online that are open and willing to help others in the same situations. abedine wants to take trains mostly everywhere which is fine with me! haha im just beyond myself to be with him for 3 weeks. we originally planned all these things to do and go see whatnot but now we are just kinda like, lets spend time with each other and family... so we are playing it by ear as to what we do. hes from taza and has family in oujda, fes, and rabat so we shall see!!

I have done that route many many times. I always found flying out of JFK to Madrid using royal air maroc and then using Iberia to go to Casa to be cheaper for me. The only thing with Iberia I noticed is you have to buy your own food. Don't know if that has changed. Madrid's airport is seriously not meant for people overnighting it so if you can avoid that by all means do. If you're just having a basic layover for a few hours that's better if you can get that. In terms of gifts I didn't get clothes until after my second trip as I knew everyone's size. I stuck to things like perfume, winter pajamas that could be worn big, slippers, games, jewelry, make-up. Those types of things. You will do fine.

Thanks! my flight goes from NY to Madrid with like a 2 hr layover then to Casa with Iberia! im super excited. im still stuck on what to get his mom. i pretty much have his aunt down with the makeup brushes. im taking them some other things like toothpaste, headache meds, just some different things for around the house. but just have no clue as to what to get his mom. i want it to be special and something she will always like and remember. ive thought about different like throw blankets and stuff but i dont know what they have available in morocco so i dont wanna get anything they could easily get there. HELP! haha

Don't know if you have already left or not, but for my mother-in-law I got her a ring that I bought, a winter snuggie almost(not quite though) and perfume.
