ok, I'm in US, fiance in Mexico.

I wanted to ask what phone plans or things other people are using to talk long distance for cheap. (and I know people could say just dont talk every day or dont talk a long time.) but I really really want to find some way were we can talk cheap.

- i have skype, he doesnt have comp, and no real access to a comp on a daily basis (no real internet where he is either)

I have a "plan" but it's very expensive. I also tried through google "voice" and even though it's cheaper, it's still expensive. when he can, my fiance will call me. That is cheaper for us, but still pretty bad. I know landlines are cheaper... but we dont have one.

what are the best phone plan solutions???

have you checked at&ts world plan?? its not bad.

Also check with your cell phone carrier to see if they have an economical plan for international calling.

I think sprint also has calling cards but dont take my word for that.

There are several companies in the web that provide calling cards to other countries. If you just serach for calling cards, you will find many sites to chose from. They are all different you just need to spend some time looking at all or a few of them and chosing the card that best suits you. Be careful and look at the details. Some cards want a monthly service charge ( not bad if you use all the minutes in a month) or some have rounding to the next 3 minutes and some as little as a minute. Also be sure to check charges to the city he lives in, spme of the cards charge more for smaller cities. Good luck. I cannot recommend a card for you as only you know what you will need. I now use a card called Beta for Lima Peru, I do not think it is good for Mexico.

Have you considered vonage? It's not SUPER cheap but I definitely think it would be cheaper than calling from a cell phone. Give it a look: http://www.vonage.com/how_vonage_works/?refer_id=WEBHO0706010001W&lid=how_vonage_works_learn_more the bolded part here: "But even though your phone uses the Internet, it has nothing to do with your computer. In fact, your computer doesn't have to be on to use Vonage. The people you call don't need to have Vonage or the Internet to get your call - just a phone. And when someone calls you, your phone rings as usual." sounds like exactly what you need... plus phonecards are good but his way you don't need to keep buying them.

I use Rebtel. It's proven to be the least expensive I could find and most importantly, it provides us with a phone record of the calls made back and fouth to each other with dates and length of calls which is VERY important to help in proving our ongoing relationship at the Embassy interview.

Make sure if you use a calling plan that it will permit you to get detailed calling records for you and your fiance's calls. Some international calling cards only give you a PIN and do not provide a record of calls made.

My fiance and I use Nextel radio (sprint in the us), its not super cheap, but it is really convenient, some months we have talked 3 000 min and we always pay the same. I pay about 45dls in mexico and he pays about 29 in the US...its always more expensive in Mexico for some reason.
