My wife entered usa yesterday and when the immigration officer opened her brown envelope all he gave her was the passport when does she get her ss card and green card so she can go to work?

The green card will probably arrive in a few weeks in the mail, but could take longer. Depends how long it takes for your POE location to send the envelope to USCIS.

For the SSN, if you checked 'yes' on the DS-230 for getting one, then it MAY arrive in the mail. If it doesn't after 3 weeks from POE, then you should go to the local SSA office and apply there. That's what I had to do.

It's important to understand that teh I-551 stamp in her passport is a temporary green card, so she can travel immediately and get a job as soon as she has her SS#--no need ot wait for the actual green card
