Travelling home with greencard

Hi,

I am here on a CR-1 Green Card, my husband and I are going to England in October, its our first trip with my permanent residency card...my question is what do I do with my green card? Do I show that along with my passport?

The only time I show my green card is when I go through US Customs on my way back to the US. I use my passport every other time ID is required.

When eneterign back in to Canada I show them my passport (Cdn) and when I return to the USA al they want to see is the green card. I usually present both to them, but they never look at the passport, just the greencard!

You will need to show your green card (along with your passport) on the way back to the US.

If your passport is under your maiden name and the green card under your married name, don't forget to bring with you a copy of your marriage certificate as proof of the name change.

I'll bet that you show it to US Immigration, also. I'm surprised to read that Customs wants to see it in your case.

I just came back from a business trip to Europe using my GC, I had to show it at the airline counter (because venezuelan citizens need visas to enter the US) and then at the Customs and Immigration Officer in Philly. She asked me since then I had my card, and what was I doing outside the US, the name of my company and if I brought any meat or cheese. Just chocolates I said, and that was all!

I offered my marriage certificate in both cases, to prove the name change, but in both cases they said it was not needed. Not that this implies that you should not bring it, on the contrary, be prepared always in case they ask.

Soon (though--I think early 2007), it looks like you will need to show your passport as well when re-entering US.

For Limey GC holder, prolly best to show both when re-entering US.

(good question is whether I can still use my citizenship card to enter Canada and my US passport to reenter US after).

When we went to the UK in June, I was asked to show my GC every time I produced my Passport...both on leaving and re-entering the US. The GC was in my married name and my Passport was in my maiden name, but I was never asked for my Marriage Cert., but I took it anyway and would advise anyone in the same situation to carry it with them.
