Sofiyya, the comment after yours is very much clear though on the process with USCIS, and whether he is Sunni or Shia, or his religion legitimizing it or not DOES NOT AFFECT USCIS PROCESS. But i also love him and i want to make him happy, thats why im being open to it.

Nothing wrong at all with making each other happy :D That's a great way to begin a marriage. You're right, as long as you're married legally, you can continue on with your AOS processing.

I don't understand why he's telling you that he has to marry in a masjid or that he has to do the nikah first. That may be a personal preference, but it's not a faith directive, and it's certainly possible to marry civilly and religiously at the same time.

Whatever you decide to do, remember not to lose yourself in the process of pleasing him. A Muslim husband is obligated to let his Christian wife practice her faith. You have a say about how you marry, as well. It's not all about him; it's about you, too.

My best to you both!

Muslim marriage or Nikah is a very simple ceremony. You two may or may not be seperated from each other and each one of you will be asked 3 times and expected to reply 3 times that you accept one another. A few words from the Quran will be read and the Imam may give a short speech on married life. It takes roughly 15 minutes or so. The Nikah can be performed in a Mosque or in your home. You would obtain the marriage license from a local office.

Thank you very much:)It was very informative. And good luck to you too and best wishes :)

If he is only giving you "certain information" I would tread VERY carefully if I were you. Not for any other reason than you should not be going into a marriage without knowing the full scope of things. Not only does he withold information from you but he is giving you incorrect information by saying you HAVE to do it a certain way which just happens to be the way he wants. Sofiyya says it is an obligation of a Muslim Husband to allow his Christian wife to practice her beliefs. If you said you wanted to get married in a church would he really be willing to do so?

It seems as though you may benefit from researching your Husband's religion some more and not just listening to what he wants to tell you about it. Not for any reason other than the fact that some people take their religion VERY seriously and this will have an impact on the way your marriage works.

Below is the definition of a Civil Marriage which IS all you need to be considered married in the U.S. for any legal purposes. Your Husbands religion is a different matter completely and comes down to personal preferences. I personally got married in a civil ceremony as neither me nor my Husband follow a religion.

From Wikipedia. "Civil Marriage"

"United States In all states in the United States, it is possible to obtain a civil marriage. Such ceremonies are conducted before a local civil authority, such as a mayor, judge, deputy marriage commissioner or other public official. It is not uncommon for these ceremonies make mention of a deity, but most do not reference any specific religion. Many of these ceremonies take place in the town hall or local courthouse. As part of such ceremonies, a religious official such as a rabbi, pastor, or qadi may be given the authority to conduct the marriage by the state, thus unifying the religious with the civil ceremony."

I am pretty sure if you receive a religious marriage without the civil marriage you are technically not married as it won't be recognised by the state ONLY the religion. Someone should correct me if I have this wrong though.

Hello, i have a few questions. But first of all a few words about my situation. Im about to get married to a muslim guy and im christian. And after he is going to petition for me as an immediate relative for me to become a lawful premanent resident. So how is the muslim marriage done? He tells me that we have to go to the mosque and obtain a marriage contract. Can we go to a town hall and obtain a marriage certificate from there?

Hi, hopefully I can help you with this question. I too am a Christian and my husband is Muslim. We were married at a local mosque here in Cincinnati by an Imam. Why? Because, the point is not getting married in a mosque, the point is that in Islam a marriage is not considered accepted unless the couple are married by a MUSLIM whether he is an Imam or someone who is muslim and legally entitled to marry you. I totally understand what your fiance means by his question. You will apply for your Marriage Certificate when you decide on what date to marry as normal. On the day you marry, take the Marriage Certificate with you and give it to the Imam and he will sign and so will the witnesses and they too must be muslim as well. We didn't have any muslim friends that could be a witness, so the mosque provided us with four but I think only two may be required. Once married, he will present you with 2 marriage certificates, the one you had to go and registered for at the court house and the other will be from the mosque they provide.

As far as the money/dowery he is to offer you as a gift, yes, my husband did so as well, and this was written on the marriage contract from the mosque, it's no big deal. I just accepted the money and turned around and put it into our personal bank account.

I think marrying the mosque was a beautiful experience and if I had to do it all over again, I would. My 13 year old daughter almost say by my side during the ceremony as my husband sat just in front of us. The Imam talked about 15 minutes and spoke much about the importance of marriage as well. It was a beautiful moment.

Hope this helps.

I would say before you marry this man you should understand the religion a little bit. Sunni or Shiite is a very minor thing and should be easy enough for him to share. I don't know why it would be secret... It sounds like he's using his religion already to tell you how things "must" be done. (I'm Muslim by the way) An Islamic marriage has nothing to do with USCIS. Many mosques won't preform a religious marriage without a civil marriage and some will do the marriage certificate portion.

I would like to thank everyone that replied to this topic, it was very helpful. I definitely have more understanding of what we should do and should discuss. As far as the islamic group he belongs too( some people said it's a minor difference, others though say it matters in some cases)i asked him and he said he is wahabi. And from THE VERY LITTLE (unfortunately) that i know, i believe there is only three groups, statictically the largest ones, im sure theres more, and they dont really get along with each other. Someone should correct me, if im wrong.

Also to those of you guys that keep responding to my posts, my fiance is pakistani. Yup. Im far from being called a person that can be blinded with feelings, im very careful and one of the few reasons we are together is the stability, not financial, but emotional rather, that he promotes. He is free from bad habits, and he is the definition of what a male should really be. So he was born in Pakistan and came here with his family, he was naturalized in 2005.
