I need to renew my passport, however, I am uneasy about not having a passport on me for 6+ weeks. I have a few family members that could get sick at any time and would like to be able to return to Canada if necessary. Does anyone know if I HAVE to send in my old passport?

Thanks

If you do a search you will find some recent Cdn passport stories and your probably looking at 3 weeks. Took me 17 days a few yrs back and I only sent in in snail mail, where many UPS it. Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

It's just a chance you have to take - unless you go back home to a local Passport Canada office - your old passport will have the corner cut off but you will get it back right away and it will still be invalid (You could probably return to Canada with the invalidated passport and the receipt from the Passport office if you had too - don't know if anyone's done it) You can travel into Canada on your US GC I believe.

It really is just a couple weeks, none of us liked doing it though :(

You can use the form for Canadians adults wanting to renew their passports .. it is valid for those who live in Canada or the US.

If you use that form, you do need to include your old passport with the form (they will send it back to you if you ask... or else they will safely destroy it)

If you don't have your old passport then you can't use the renewing form. You have to ask for a new passport...

Good luck

When you use the Simplified Renewal Application Process, you do not have to resubmit proof of Canadian citizenship, supplementary identification or guarantor information.

To be eligible for Simplified Renewal:

* you must have been at least 16 years of age at the time of your previous application;

* your name on the application form is exactly as it appears on page 2 of the submitted passport;

* you submit a previous Canadian passport that:

o was/is valid for five (5) years;

o is not damaged;

o was never reported lost or stolen; and

o Either was issued to you in Canada (see issuing authority on page 2 of the passport) and is valid or expired for no more than one year;

o Or, was issued to you outside of Canada (see issuing authority on page 2 of the passport) after April 30, 2006.

Reference sites: www.passportcanada.gc.ca (they have a special instruction for Canadians that are in the US that NEED their passport renewed) and http://www.ppt.gc.ca/articles/20090424.aspx?lang=eng

If you get your old passport returned to you, it will have the bottom right hand corner cut off and will be stamped as CANCELLED. If you are travelling within Canada prior to it's physical expiration date, then the airline will still accept it (they did for me 2 weeks ago when travelling from BC to Montreal on an airline ticket in my maiden name), but they were very very clear that it would NOT be valid for travel to the USA. So I would think it would not be acceptable to travel from the US either, but I could be wrong.

Best of luck!

You shouldn't take 6 weeks. Don't send it by registered or certified mail using USPS - send it by courier. It is more expensive but much faster and a better guarantee that it will arrive. You can also track it all the way (USPS only tracks to the border and it can take up to a month to get a certified package back either from within the US or sent from without). Passport Canada will have it delivered back to you by courier as well. Mine took 10 days processing and then courier time so under 2 weeks from sending off the application and getting the passport in my hand.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
