Just to clarify, I am translating letters of affedavit from my wifes parents done by a Notario and stamped. but i cant seem to locate that part from the USCIS site that you sign to affirm your capable of doing the translation. anyone have it handy???

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

Certification by Translator

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

Signature_________________________________

Date Typed Name

Address

It's a formal letter but why bother with the notario and all the hassle. It can be in plain English signed by her parents. It's not like USCIS will find them and test their English skills to make sure they are the ones writing the affidavit. But it's just my opinion.

And I mean affidavits signed by her parents in English. I'm not saying go make them translate anything

I agree.. If your parents understand english just have them write the letters in english and save yourself the time and money of doing all that. Just notarize them and call it a day!

On our documents depending on where the translation was done we have different wordings. One follows exactly what Maviboran said above and the other reads as follows:

Original document is translated from Georgian into English at the Apostille and Lagalization division of the LEPL Civil Registry Agency of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia by translator Babulia XXXXXX on February 09, 2011.

She then stamped and signed it and it has a number printed on there as well presumably a tracking number of some sort.

well unfortunately for me 1. her parents dont speak english and 2. they went and got this done already so without waiting for more papers i am just going to use what i already have done. which is two letter from her parents sworn before a notario. i will do the translation myself and then sign it. one question, do i need to have my signing it notorized?

I would strongly suggest you get them done at a certified translator. You can probably find one next to the Colombian consulate/embassy.

I am not in colombia at the moment so that would be impossible. to clarify, i appreciate your concern however I am only speaking of the couple items for bonafide marriage etc. My marriage documents, and my stepsons documents all have been done by a agency in colombia and i have them all here. i am only talking about simple letters that say yes we are married and i provide support for my wife and stepson etc. the only other letter i am going to trans is one from my wifes school where i pay the tuition thats says i am the spouse of my wife passport number etc, and i am responsible for her tuition and fees etc. showing proof of relationship.

Just place the template from a couple of posts above at the bottom of each letter, I translated all the documents and everything went really smooth.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but from my understanding nobody requires you to go and spend money on translations. They just want a backup saying that the person translating the forms is fluent in both languages. I translated every single thing myself. Marriage certificate, birth certificate etc. And got a friend (I'm not saying go get your buddies to translate! Make sure it looks professional enough.) to double check everything and sign that statement template with his contact information. It worked for me. Hope it does for you as well!

thanks for all the input eveyone. and yes correct no one is saying we need to go spend money on translations but in my case it was either that or argue with my wife about the fine points of immigration in the usa versus the colombian embassy, which she seems to think she understands for some reason. anyways no harm to foul, she paid for the translations of her birth certificate and her sons, as well as her law suit against her sons father to revoke his custody which she won. and our marriage certificate. the other stuff i am gonna do myself just trying to make them look really good and clean. which is why i wanted to make sure i understood everything. thanks again. now my only dilema is to sign it myself or find a freind to sign them for us. any thoughts?
