(CBS/AP) Diabetes has gone global - and the epidemic is getting worse, says a global diabetes authority.

A "staggering" 366 million people around the world have either Type 1 or 2 diabetes, says the International Diabetes Federation. The disease has taken a deadly toll, causing 4.6 million deaths each year, or one death every seven seconds. The diabetes epidemic is also heavy on healthcare spending, to the tune of $465 billion a year to fight the disease.

The federation says it's time for global officials to step up and commit more time and research to prevent diabetes.

"The clock is ticking for the world's leaders," Jean Claude Mbanya, president of the federation, said in a written statement. "We expect action from their meeting next week at the United Nations that will halt diabetes' relentlessly upwards trajectory."

The federation, which represents associations from more than 160 countries, announced the figures in Lisbon, Portugal on Tuesday. It wants officials to outline concrete measures to stop the epidemic. Some experts suggest diabetes treatment should be integrated into local health clinics.

In August, a study in The Lancet estimated another 65 million Americans would be obese by 2030, which would tack on another 8 million new cases of diabetes, CBS News reported.

Type 2 diabetes develops when the body doesn't produce enough insulin to break down glucose, increasing the body's blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes is linked to obesity, and can be managed with diet, physical activity, and sometimes, medication. Diabetes also contributes to complications, like cataracts, skin ulcers, kidney disease, and nerve damage.

I believe it i see fat people more and more each day the thin people would be out weight.

That's not a nice comment. My wife is diabetic and believe me she isn't overweight. :bonk:

It's not just about weight, I think people should check things out before jumping to conclusions. My father died of a heart attack, he was a diabetic too and he was as fit as a fiddle. He was below average weight and walked 5 miles every day, no matter what the weather was.

Next thing you know Obama or some other tool is going to want billions of dollars to help fat people who are too ignorant to diet.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Now that I think about it, I can see the government banning all fatty foods for the fact it wants to protect the ignorant people and take away choice. People these days aren't intelligent enough to make their own decisions on what to eat and what not to eat...or at least that's the way the government see's it.

Myself...I'm a true believer in thinning out the ignorant. Let nature take over...

It is generic too. So if I became a diabetic that makes me unhealthy. I am 6 ft 3 and an outdoor type. I run everyday, I eat healthy with no fast food at all, but I could still develop the disease. Do I deserve to die?

It's not always about over eating

My fiancee died of diabetes type 1. She was thin as a rail. This article in the OP is based more on the type 2 by the way it went on about over weight people. Anyone that knows about diabetes knows fat people are more likely to get type 2.

As a type 1 diabetic I agree that the above article is primarily focusing on those with type 2 diabetes - which is often, but not always, caused by heavier body weight. Many people have inherited what is popularly called a 'thrifty' gene. When our ancestors were faced with little food, they were able to survive and even thrive on very little. That survival mechanism has now become a liability for many. We have sufficient food, insufficient exercise and a stressful lifestyle - all factors that contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. It is an epidemic and it is something that people can control. As my endocrinologist first explained it, it is like a small engine trying to drive a big car - it can't really handle the job. The pancreas is the same way. It can't handle the job. Many type 2 diabetics in fact are insulin resistant - their pancreas produces lots of insulin (sometimes too much) but their blood cells have 'forgotten' how to use it effectively - either not enough receptors or just doesn't recognize insulin as insulin. Losing weight back to a normal body size goes a long way to returning blood glucose levels and pancreatic function back to normal.

The pancreas also ages, though, and as people live longer more and more elderly people whether they are overweight or not also develop diabetes.

Type 1 diabetics have a different type of diabetes although the effects are basically the same. Their pancreas for one reason or another does not produce insulin (in my case it was a viral attack where my body attacked its own pancreatic beta cells, destroying them) thus requiring them to take insulin externally for the rest of their lives. Type 1 diabetics cannot 'recover' by losing weight, and in many cases are not overweight at all. A good spokesperson for Type 1 diabetes is Mary Tyler Moore.

So, yeah, it is a good idea not to paint every one with the same brush. There is a diabetes epidemic, it is predominantly because of our lifestyles and abundant food choices, and it is a serious disease.

Why_Me, I am sorry about your fiancee (F) .

Only 65 million obese by 2030?

I think that's lowballing it quite a bit. Aren't something like 30% of adults and 20% of kids already obese?
