Losing my mind, homesick...

I know this has been covered at nauseous but here I am. Been living in the US for close to 3 years and I like it but I miss home so much. I've started looking into getting my husband Canadian permanent residency. Now dont get me wrong, it will never happen because he's made quite clear he's never leaving the South. But miracles do happen, right? lol

Anyway, this is just a useless rant from a French Canadian girl who cried at work in her car today over lunch time because she missed her home so much.

Sorry to hear you are having a hard time. :(

I was thinking that you might be able to find another French Canadian Girl Expat to hang out with in Texas if you check out some of the expat sites. Get out for coffee, go to a museum, talk in french...won't be the same as home but it might help you from being so homesick.

Bonne chance!

Hikergirl: Thank you for your message, it made me feel better. It's just a bad day I guess and I need to remind myself that so may Canadians feel this way. I chose to come down here for a job and now I am where I am. I made my bed, I can lay in it. It's a pretty comfy bed most of the time, anyway lol

I haven't been home in too long a time and I think a visit home as soon as I can get time off will help tremedulously.

yes, i feel much better now, I was able to take time off work and Im going home to Canada shortly for 2 weeks :)

I will make a better efforts when I get back to find other French Canadians in my region, or just French speaking people. It helps, being able to speak your native language once in a while.

Thank you for your reply and suggestion, I appreciate it! Glad that you were able to find friends from Venezuela! I went to Caracas and Maracaibos a few years back and LOVE IT!

hey.. this may sound stupid.. but maybe contact the FRENCH teacher at local schools.. or university.. they may be able to point towards a french network..

what part of the country are you in?! maybe some vj'rs could help you out with this..

ps.. the homesick part is what i am worried about for my better half.. so i am doing lots of research before we submit K1 in Jan... luckily, with my job i was able to meet a consultant that is from Venezuela and i inquired about the VENZ expats.. she informed Austin has a large community!! soo. i hope it makes her more comfortable.. :)

ps.. yes.. i was in VENZ for 2 weeks in August!! i can't wait to go back.. but i won't have enough Vacation days for another year.. BUT.. i might use that time.. to back WHEN she gets the k1 and we can BOTH come back together!!

I feel for you La2011 :)

I've been in NM a couple times back when my husband and I were dating and I just moved permanently when I received my visa this June. I couldn't find any other French Canadians but I found French speaking club in my area. It's enough for me to not feel too homesick. Look it up, there might be on in TX too. Search for ''French language'' as interest on this website: http://www.meetup.com/. My group has very nice and helpful members. I meet them about once a month and it feels good to speak French :)

I also contacted local French schools to offer to volunteer for them. The French community in NM is pretty close knitted. We're expats from allover the world and I have yet to meet another person from Quebec here... But I haven't given up!

US citizen since April 2016

ROC completed April 2014

AOS from K1 completed February 2012

LA2011,

I lived in 6 European countries (including France) and briefly for 6 months in India before coming to the U.S., yet I have never been to Canada in my life. My wife wants us to ride the Mountaineer some day and I can imagine that the scenery must be beautiful. But what is it you are missing particularly while being in the U.S.? It can't be the cold, so I'm quite curious . . .

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

President Teddy Roosevelt on Columbus Day 1915
