At any rate, there is no Federal Law requiring a US citizen to show LEOs ID. States have stop and identify laws that require varying levels of information - the most strict version being address name and age.

In all of the examples you have provided, driving a motor vehicle, entering airport security, going to a polling station etc. the person has a choice whether to go there and do those things.

However, riding in a vehicle, walking down a street etc. there is NO requirements to show or even carry a physical ID, nor is their a requirement to prove US citizenship. If that were the case we'd be living in a totalitarian regime.

We are going back in the same circle....:)

What you are saying is very nice to hear but unfortunately it does not work that way..... on bus, train airport security(added after 9/11) or on the street or at your work place.

ICE can come in asking everyone to prove their legal status, you and I both know ICE raids the meat plants, even IT companies and asking all the employees to provide their legal status.

And you do provide it either by showing a document or giving out few details (verbally) and they checking it against their D/B to make sure who you claming to be are you.

Voting you can claim you are only showing ID to enter, to me you are proving your identiy to do some activity, which is retricted based on your identity.

Another post had ICE pulling over ppl on freeway and asking for identity.

Are we living in totalitarian......hmmmm I dont know. :)

I think both Amtrak and Greyhound have boarding passes with names. (I've taken the California Zephr train a few times and they definitely get your data.)

Can you give them a false name and pay with cash? Or use someone else's ticket?

On amtrak yes once you have the ticket in hand you could board using some other persons. You can walk straight to the platform and on the train...they check the ticket validity on the train but thats it...just my experience.
