Hi,

I entered the US on an immigrant visa for which my mother filed. I was previously under the F1 category. My PoE was Chicago on Aug 26 2011.

I have yet to receive what others mention is the 'Welcome Notice'. A mistake I made was that I checked the box on the DS-230 that asked for the creation of an SSN. Now I can't even get my driver's license till I get the SSN and I can't apply for it coz I've already applied using the DS-230.

I was just wondering what the 'Welcome Notice' looks like. Is it that blue colored 'Welcome to America' brochure they gave me when they approved my immigrant visa at the interview? Or is it something else? Am I to be alarmed abt it since 3 weeks have passed and nothing has shown up in the mail?

I have to leave to wrap things up in my country of origin and it worries me that it would affect me adversely.

Interview Notice: Mar 2011

Medical: Mar 2011

Interview: Apr 14 2011

Collected Immigrant Visa: Apr 15, 2011

PoE: Chicago on Aug 26, 2011

Welcome Notice / GC / SSN / DL: Still in Anticipation

I got my GC based on an F2B which later converted to an F2A. It took close to 10yrs during which I tried applying for the DV unsuccessfully. My GF who is a first time applicant got selected for DV2015! We're keeping our fingers crossed.

Hi raverz, May I ask what your priority date is? I am also F1 category waiting for priority date to be current. Regarding SSN, did you try to contact the social security office in the city where you live?

Why is checking the box on the DS-230 that asked for the creation of an SSN a mistake?

My priority date was 22 OCT 2002

I went to the closest Social Security office and they told me not to apply until after 30 days have passed since it may create 2 numbers which may be a problem since I checked the box on the DS-230. Therefore, it's advisable not to check this box but to do it yourself at the SSA office which is way faster. I've seen most ppl who did it themselves receive it within 10 days.

I just called the USCIS and they told me it takes up to 30 days to get the welcome notice and up to a further 30 days for the GC to arrive. They are not able to provide much detail on the SSN application as it falls under a different organizations purview.

Just got the welcome notice on Monday Sep 19 2011.

The welcome notice which arrived on Sep 19 2011 was dated Sep 13 2011.

I just checked the website with the new I-797 number on the welcome notice and it says

"On September 19, 2011, we mailed you a notice that we have approved this OS155A IMMIGRANT VISA AND ALIEN REGISTRATION. Please follow any instructions on the notice. If you move before you receive the notice, call customer service at 1-800-375-5283.

For approved applications/petitions, post-decision activity may include USCIS sending notification of the approved application/petition to the National Visa Center or the Department of State. For denied applications/petitions, post-decision activity may include the processing of an appeal and/or motions to reopen or reconsider and revocations."

What is this supposed to mean? Are there any actions required from my end or will they send the green card?

Appreciate any comments.
