There were reports that the police stood by and watched them take apart the wall around the Israeli embassy.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

The people who did this are criminals and should be treated harshly as such.

It seems they are being treated as criminals:

Egypt's military police has arrested 92 protesters for attacking and storming the Israeli embassy, bringing the arrest toll to 111.

...

Egypt's ruling military council told the state-run media agency, MENA, that the general prosecution is interrogating the suspects, who will later stand trial in the High State Security emergency court.

The emergency courts have jurisdiction under the emergency laws imposed by the ousted regime, who abused the laws against citizens and was one of the factors that set the scene for Egypt's January 25 Revolution.

I'm surprised Israel waited this long to evacuate the embassy - you'd think they'd have gotten their people out of there when the revolution started.

It is being reported that Egypt had already warned Israel to keep its ambassador at home, due to the public's anger over Israel's killing of the 6 Egyptian security officers (one died of his injuries on Sunday) and refusal to apologize:

On the eve of the attack on the Israeli Embassy in Cairo, Egypt asked Israel to keep its ambassador at home on "a long vacation," according to a report Sunday on the website of the Egyptian daily, Al-Ahram. The report quotes a senior Egyptian source as saying that the request came in order to avoid a situation of further tension and escalation, amid fears that the Egyptian mob may seek to attack the embassy.

The senior Egyptian source said, however, that the Israeli government insisted on sending the ambassador back to Cairo as soon as possible. "Afterwards, we were forced to turn to the Americans in order to rescue the ambassador from Cairo," the source commented.

Those are Egyptians in the OP photo protecting the Israeli embassy are they not?

And it was Egyptian commandos who rescued the six Israeli personnel who remained inside the embassy - all security guards, according to Israeli reports.
