There's a scene in the movie No Country for Old Men in which the sheriff and Carla Jean, the wife of the film's main figure, sit in a coffee shop in Odessa and talk about the determination of those pursuing her husband. "They won't quit," says the sheriff. "He won't neither," she says. "He never has." In Texas myth, that's a virtue - in politics, it's not so clear. But Rick Perry's campaign has made a strategic decision: showcase Perry's no-retreat on Social Security, climate change and evolution because it believes GOP voters are hungry for red-meat rhetoric and a candidate who won't back down from strong positions. Call it the Moss Doctrine, from the movie's cowboy protagonist, Llewelyn Moss.

...

Perry went into Wednesday's debate in California ready to punch back at any challenge and defend even his most provocative ideas.

...

Among the Perry fans at the rally in the Republican stronghold, was Orange County resident Betty Krusiewicz. She said she's sold on Perry because "he can communicate that conviction about what's truthful versus what's politically correct." She said she speaks for many Orange County conservatives in calling Romney "presidential fluff" and she said that while she admires Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann for her staunch conservatism, she would not support her for president. "I will not vote for a woman," she said. "I believe a man should lead this country."

"I will not vote for a woman," she said. "I believe a man should lead this country."

And, I have no doubt if she were questioned further, she'd clarify that she believes a white, Christian, straight man should lead this country. It's a democracy. She's entitled to her opinion, and her vote.
