Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for some input. My fiance came here on a K-1 visa, and then we got her a social security card. Then we got married. We went to the social security office this morning to change her last name on her ss card and were told they won't do this until she has her green card. Does this sound right?

Thanks for your input.

Bill

Yep, we are changing ours or requesting a change when we interview for AOS, USCIS advised this also on phone. Easier to have all documents in same name. After GC we will change SS and DL etc.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

I was able to change my name beforehand, though... I brought the marriage certificate, I-94, and passport.

But I can't change my name on my DL until I get either EAD or Green Card, according to California DMV...

We were told we had to use the maiden name until it was changed in the system. I'm not sure at what point the name is changed in the system, but we're going to try a name change once the EAD is issued.

We were married 3 weeks and then got SSN and got in married name had no problem. If it's in the maiden name no worries just change it after GC as that will be in married name.

Divorced !st November 2012.

Married only 2 years 1 month

No --My wife name was changed on her social card after we were married . It took 1 week after to receive it in the mail . The only thing they needed her Green Card for a name change was for her Drivers Permit / Licence. I will do that when we receive the Green card .

While you're SUPPOSED to be able to change it, some SSA officers are morons. Some tell you you need to wait for GC. Some tell you that marriage changed your visa to a K3.. complete ridiculousness.

I believe the response they give you also depends on how close you are to the expiration date on your i-94. If you're within 30 days of it expiring you can't change the last name on it. If you had waited to apply for it altogether till now they'd also deny you.

I got my SS card roughly 3 weeks after my entry on my K1 visa. The officer told me that I shouldn't try to change my name until I have my EAD in hand...So I'll just have to wait and see I guess. In Michigan I can't get my drivers' license til I have my EAD as well, or library card, or pretty much anything..! LOL

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all your responses. Here in Florida my fiancee can not get her drivers license or state ID card until she has her Green Card. So, we will just continue the process and apply for everything after she gets that.

Again, thanks for all your quick responses.
