The Sukhoi Su-27/30/35 Flanker, in the right hands will take the F-15 in close (just don't include the Indian AF's Su-30MKIs in that, because the USAF found out at Red Flag that the IAF pilots had little clue on how to use the 3D vectoring on the engine nozzles and ended up sitting targets). BVR, it's no contest, with the Russian missiles having the range advantage, and the Flanker carrying a heavier load-out.

If it ever came to a fight between the two, the Eurofighter Typhoon would also take the F-15 in close, as well as the Flanker. At range, they have a similar number and type of weapons, so there is no clear advantage yet. However, when the MDBA Meteor radar guided AAM enters service, the Typhoon will gain the upper hand and close the gap on the Flanker.

All this, however, depends on the skill of the pilots for dogfighting, and the quality, capability and dependability of the kit at long ranges. To its great credit, the F-15 Eagle has been in service for 35 years and, in the right hands, it will still hold its own with most anything else in the sky. Many are being updated with AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar, to bring their electronics up-to-date, and their missile armament matches the F-22.

More than that, though, 39 years after it first flew, the F-15 still looks cool. B-)

Yes, but you have to remember we sell our enemies our planes and make better ones so we can shoot them down next time we fight them. It's a win-win!

You're forgetting a key component to our air war strategy - AWACS.

What do you think the Russians use?

The Chinese?

The UK has them, as does France, as does NATO as a whole. Pakistan is receiving AWACS systems, as is Turkey. India has them, as does Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Sweden.

AWACS is not just an American asset

We're not going to fight any of those countries any time soon. Plus, they're all using the "old stuff" - either ours or the Russians.

Apart from those nations using Israeli systems, or Swedish systems.

The only "old" kit is Chinese and Pakistani, and even China is getting up to date in a hurry. And Chinese systems are what the USA is most likely to face, when they finally decide to make a move on Taiwan.
