Hello,

I am sponsoring my wife who is applying for Adjustment of Status. She is currently on an F1 Visa.

I would like to not use a joint sponsor. To prove my sponsorship ability I am trying to show my Current Individual Annual Income. I am self employed and thus do not have an actual salary or pay stubs from the past 6 months to show my expected income for the current year.

How can I show I will make enough this year to qualify? Can I simply give copies of checks from clients from the past 6 months proving I have enough in the bank? In other words, can I simply use the number that is in my bank account as my expected income for this year?

Another question: How much weight is placed on past tax return copies? All previous 3 years tax returns show I make under the poverty line needed. Is that cause for concern?

Thanks,

Matt

In your case I would definitely get a joint sponsor. Usually, if you can prove with paystubs your current income, which is way above the poverty line, less weight is placed on previous tax returns. The other way around if you can show way above poverty line tax returns less weight is put on present prove. In your case, I would highly recommend joint sponsor.

Thanks San Diego!

I think a joint sponsor will be key. Yet, I'm still confused as to what to put in Section 6 Question 23. Do I put the number I have in my bank accounts? Basically I'm confused as to how I would total my Annual Income for that question if I don't make a "salary."

You would have to estimate based on earnings up to present time and extrapolate into entire year. For example, take total earnings for 8 months, divide by 8 and multiply by 12.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
